China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, can carry four Z-18J airborne early warning (AEW) helicopters, six Z-18F anti-submarine helicopters, two Z-9C rescue helicopters, and 24 J-15 shipborne fighter jets, the Chinese-language Shanghai Morning Post reported on Aug. 28.

Cao Dongwei, senior colonel and researcher at the People's Liberation Army Naval Research Institute, said the aircraft carrier could gain the upper hand in any potential battle for air or sea supremacy. The lineup may differ for various missions, however. The full lineup of 36 aircraft shows that the "PLA Navy's era of aircraft" has arrived, the report said.

On the tail of the Z-18F helicopter is the image of a sea eagle sprawling its talons, which suggests that the aircraft's mission is to seek out and attack enemy submarines, according to the paper. Cao said it is common practice to mark aircraft with physically tough and fierce animals to "show the spirit of bravery of the pilot and the craft itself."
The helicopter has a shipborne sea search radar that enables 360-degree detection and is equipped with dipping sonar and the report speculated that it can carry 32 sonobuoys.

China is faced with a grave threat from the US, which owns the most advanced nuclear submarines, as well as Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force, the report said. Countries operating in the South China Sea, particularly those engaged in territorial disputes with China, have also been strengthening their naval forces, putting pressure on China, said the report.
The Z-9C helicopter's ZLC-1 radar can detect up to a range of 150 meters, while the Z-18F helicopter is equipped with four 7K anti-submarine torpedoes and four YJ-91 missiles.

Pilots, Crew of Armed AW-109s to Leave by Last Quarter of 2014 for Flight Training Abroad
28 Agustus 2014
Two armed AW-109 "Power" scheduled to be delivered by January 2015 (photo : militaryphotos)
MANILA (PNA) -- The pilots and crew of the two armed AgustaWestland AW-109 "Power" helicopters, which are scheduled to be delivered by January 2015, will leave for their flight training in Italy by the last quarter of 2014.
This was revealed by Navy public affairs office chief Lt. Cmdr. Marineth Domingo in a message to the Philippines News Agency Tuesday evening.
"The pilots (and the aircrew) will leave for their training by the last quarter of the year (2014)," she said.
Training will take place at AgustaWestland facility at Cesto Calende, Italy.
The two armed AW-109s are part of the five helicopters contract from AgustaWestland inked by the Department of National Defense (DND) last year. The contract is worth Php 1.33 billion.
Three of the planes were delivered on Dec. 8 and commissioned on Dec. 20 last year.
The AW-109 is a three-ton class, eight-seat helicopter powered by two Pratt and Whitney PW206C engines.
The spacious cabin is designed to be fitted with a number of modular equipment packages for quick and easy conversion between roles.
The aircraft’s safety features include a fully separated fuel system, dual hydraulic boost system, dual electrical systems and redundant lubrication and cooling systems for the main transmission and engines.
The AW-109 has established itself as the world’s best selling light-twin helicopter for maritime missions.
Its superior speed, capacity and productivity combined with reliability and ease of maintenance make it the most cost-effective maritime helicopter in its class.
For shipboard operations, the aircraft has a reinforced-wheeled landing gear and deck mooring points as well as extensive corrosion protection measures.
The ability to operate from small ships in high sea state enables the AW-109 to perform its mission when many other helicopters would be confined to the ship’s hangar.
Over 550 AW-109 "Power" and AW-109 light utility helicopters have been ordered for commercial, parapublic and military applications by customers in almost 50 countries.

Taking hydrography to the sky is the unique task of the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) flight is and one of the lesser known capabilities of the Royal Australian Navy's Australian Hydrographic Service.
The Navy's hydrographic fleet is most visible through the fleet of two Hydrographic Survey ships and four Survey Motor Launches, but looking upwards you may see the LADS Flight, which surveys large parts of the ocean to depths of up to 70 metres, using a specially modified de Havilland Dash 8 – 200 aircraft.
Commander of the Fleet Air Arm, Commodore Vince Di Pietro, CSC, visited the team at their home base at Cairns as part of the unit’s operational airworthiness audit. His visit coincided with a six and a half hour sortie surveying an area north of the Whitsundays, for which he embarked, and a period of training encompassing Aviation Medicine, Aviation Risk Management and Crew Resource Management.
“I was very impressed with the professionalism of the civilian flight crew and the Navy Hydrographic crew who operated the flight,” Commodore Di Pietro said.
“The LADS Flight was one of the first of its type in the world and provides the Navy with an important capability, giving us both a tactical advantage in navigation as well as providing a valuable service to the commercial maritime industry.”
Commanding Officer of the LADS Flight, Lieutenant Commander David Sowter, was pleased with the result of the audit.
“Achieving operational audit requirements is a key milestone, and to do so while showcasing our capability to the head of Naval Aviation is doubly pleasing,” Lieutenant Commander Sowter said.
The LADS Flight flies more than 140 sorties per year, including forward deployed operations from all parts of Australia and overseas such as Mackay, Cocos island, Papua New Guinea and Broome (where they are currently based for six weeks).

Honeywell HUMS Selected by the Republic of Singapore for its CH-47 Fleet
28 Agustus 2014
Singapore operates 16 CH-47SDs for heliborne infantry and 17 AH-64Ds for attack helicopter (photo : Sing Mindef)
SINGAPORE — Honeywell Aerospace (NYSE: HON) has been selected to supply Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) to the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) CH-47SD Chinook helicopters.
“Our HUMS technology will provide RSAF operators with information that’s needed to keep their fleet safe and efficient,” said Mark Burgess, senior director, Defense and Space, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace. “The operational efficiencies of this technology will increase aircraft safety and availability, while reducing maintenance man-hours and parts cost for the military branch.”
The installation of HUMS on the CH-47SD Chinook helicopters is expected to:
-Reduce unscheduled maintenance
-Increase operational readiness and aircraft availability
-Reduce maintenance flight hours
-Between 2007 and 2008, a similar installation of HUMS on 71 CH-47 Chinook helicopters enabled the U.S. Army to drastically reduce the total man-hours required for maintenance.
HUMS offers analytical tools to assess an aircraft’s condition by loading the data into the ground-based station, without a need for the original equipment manufacturer’s on-site technicians. Additionally, since this technology has a low install-time – it will minimize the impact on operational readiness and downtime during the fielding process.
This is the second time Honeywell has been selected by the RSAF to provide solutions for its operations. Currently, Honeywell’s HUMS is fielded on the RSAF’s AH-64D Apache fleet with the same logistics infrastructure as the Chinook. Training efficiencies are optimized due to RSAF engineers’ existing experience with the AH-64D system.
About Honeywell HUMS
HUMS is a sensor-based monitoring system that enables preventative maintenance by measuring the health and performance of mission-critical components. By continuously monitoring aircraft flight data and vibration at numerous points throughout the drivetrain and pinpointing mechanical faults before they become catastrophic failures, HUMS provides helicopter operators with actionable information that enables them to anticipate mechanical failures and make anticipatory maintenance decisions, before the issues arise.

Upgrade to Australian Defence Force Navigation Warfare Capability
26 August 2014
JP 5408 aims to provide Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation Warfare (NAVWAR) protection to selected legacy ADF platforms and land forces. (photo : DSTO)
Minister for Defence David Johnston today announced Government approval of a critical project to upgrade and enhance the protected Global Positioning System (GPS) capability of the Australian Defence Force.
“The Government recognises that to ensure the ADF remains viable and robust we need to invest in force protection, countermeasures, protective security, system redundancy, lower signatures and stealth for our capabilities and systems,” Senator Johnston said.
GPS plays a vital role in providing accurate positioning, navigation, coordination, and targeting for the ADF and the ability to use modern GPS equipment is fundamental to operational effectiveness.
Senator Johnston said GPS jamming equipment has become easier to produce and deploy, and the ADF needed to continue to meet this evolving threat. JP 5408 Phase 3 (Platforms) Tranche 2 will enhance GPS on a range of ADF platforms by providing either protection or redundancy capabilities in response to GPS denial activities.
The total value of this project is in the order of $30 million.
Platforms to be upgraded include:
- Collins Class Submarines
- Hydrographic Survey Ships
- Survey Motor Launches
- Provision of Alignment Kits for Ground Based Air Defence systems
- Special Forces Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats
- Mine Hunter Coastal Ships.
“This project will strengthen the ADF’s ability to operate in a GPS denied environment and will increase the operational capability and safety of Australian service personnel.”
Senator Johnston said the project will include opportunities for Australian Industry partners to assist in the integration and maintenance of the protected GPS capability acquired under the project.

Two Gregorio Del Pilar-Class Frigates Programmed for Upgrades
26 Agustus 2014
New weapons and sensors programmes for Gregorio del Pilar class frigates including : CIWS, SSM, SAM and combat system (photo : Timawa)
PNA – The two Gregorio Del Pilar frigates in the Philippine Navy service are programmed for upgrades to restore the ships to their original US Coast Guard configurations.
This was revealed by Navy public affairs office chief Lt. Cmdr. Marineth Domingo in a message to the PNA.
“Both vessels are programmed for upgrades in terms of sensors and firepower to revive their original capabilities,” she added.
Both ships are members of the 11-ship Hamilton class cutters designed and built for the US Coast Guard for heavy weather patrolling during the 1960s.
These ships are the largest in the US Coast Guard service and armed with the 76mm Oto Melara automatic cannon and closed-in-weapon systems.
One sister ship, the USCGC Mellon was even fitted with a Harpoon anti-ship missile system during the 1990s.
But Domingo said specifics for the upgrades are not yet out as it defends on the availability of funds.
Earlier, the PN earlier announced that the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PF-15), one of the two Hamilton-class cutters in Philippine service, will be fitted with two Mark 38 Model 2 25mm “Bushmaster” automatic cannons before the end of the year.
“PF-15 (BRP Gregorio Del Pilar) has the priority in getting these weapons. These will be fitted before the end of the year. After this, the BRP Ramon Alcaraz (PF-16), will be fitted next,” she added.
BRP Gregorio Del Pilar is now undergoing minor maintenance at her Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales.
These weapons will act as the ship’s secondary weapons.
The weapon was commissioned by the US Navy following the terrorist attack on the USS Cole in 2000, was designed to counter high-speed maneuvering surface targets and will be installed in almost all US surface ships by 2015.
The remotely controlled chain gun system can fire as many as 180 25m rounds per minute at targets as far as two kilometers.
These weapons will be fitted by a US Coast Guard team after the PN found out that having a private shipyard install the guns extreme expensive.

Wamenhan : Indonesia Butuh 60 Rudal Anti Kapal Jarak Sedang
26 Agustus 2014
TNI AL membutuhkan 60 rudal SSM jarak sedang untuk dipasang di Kapal Cepat Rudal (photo : BUMN)
Beijing (ANTARA News) - Wakil Menteri Pertahanan (Wamenhan) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin mengatakan Indonesia membutuhkan sekitar 60 unit peluru kendali (rudal) jarak sedang untuk Kapal Cepat Rudal (KCR) TNI Angkatan Laut.

Navy to Receive State-of-the-Art EW Capability on AWDs
26 Agustus 2014
AWD EW antenna log out (photo : RAN)
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) will receive a state-of-the-art electronic warfare (EW) system as part of the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) capability, which will improve the ability to passively detect, identify and track threats including enemy ships, aircraft and anti-ship missiles.
The AWD Alliance successfully fitted the first EW antenna on top of the mast of the future guided missile destroyer Hobart on 6 August, making it the highest point on the ship.
The location of the antenna is significant as the height provides the range advantage - enabling the Royal Australian Navy to identify threats at the horizon.
“This state-of-the-art EW system is a critical capability for the Navy,” said Commodore Steve Tiffen, General Manager of Stakeholder Engagement in the AWD Alliance.
“It is a passive system that is able to distinguish between friendly, neutral and hostile threats within seconds.”
A 'bird’s eye' view from a crane of the Electronic Warfare antenna being loaded into Ship 01, the Royal Australian Navy's future Air Warfare Destroyer, Hobart. (photo : AWD Alliance)
“This particular EW system, which is also being fitted onto the LHD and Anzac class ships, will significantly improve the Navy’s tactical advantage, by increasing the distance from which threats can be detected.”
“The EW system expands the types of threats that can be detected to encompass the most modern types of radar and communications systems. This will ultimately allow for more time for the crew to react and improve their ability to control the battlespace,” Commodore Tiffen said.
The EW system contributes to the overall defensive ability of the ship, by providing threat and situational information to the overarching tactical picture, and enabling the control and launch of off-board countermeasures, including the Nulka decoy, which is used to defend the ship against anti-ship missiles.
The increased situational awareness also supports the earlier engagement of threats with the AWD’s weapons, providing an important tactical advantage.

Adelaide, Australia - (NYSE: CAE; TSX: CAE) - Today at the SimTect/SimHealth show, Australia's annual conference and exhibition focused on simulation, CAE announced it has recently demonstrated the networking and interoperability of C-130J training systems located at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Richmond.
CAE successfully linked the CAE-built C-130J full-flight and mission simulator (FFMS) with a C-130J tactical airlift crew trainer (TACT) developed by Bluedrop and Virtual Simulation Systems (VSS) to demonstrate a single virtual aircraft operating in a common synthetic environment. The networked training devices demonstrated how the entire mission crew, including C-130J pilots and loadmasters, could train together in an integrated virtual environment.
"We recognize that our defence customers need to be able to conduct more of their training in a cost-effective virtual environment, so this demonstration was a perfect opportunity to show how our training systems integration capabilities can help the Royal Australian Air Force enhance its ability to conduct integrated mission training and rehearsal," said Peter Redman, Vice President and General Manager, CAE Australia. "There are technical challenges associated with interoperability when trying to network training devices with different architectures from various manufacturers; however, these challenges can be overcome and the end result can be improved mission training prior to operational deployments."
CAE is an expert training systems integrator with a range of experience integrating and supporting networked mission training.
