MANILA (PNA) -- A Sikorsky S-70A medium helicopter of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is now up for maintenance.

In line with this, a total of Php2,301,260 is allocated for the acquisition of spare parts and maintenance of the said aircraft.

The Air Force is known to operate three units of the S-70A.

Pre-bid conference is scheduled on May 21 at 1 p.m. at the PAF Procurement Center Conference Room, Villamor Air Base, Pasay City.

Submission and bid opening is on June 4 at 9 a.m. also on the same venue.

Prospective bidders should have an experience in similar project within the last five years.

The Sikorsky S-70 is a medium transport helicopter family manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft.

It was developed for the US Army in the 1970s, winning a competition to be designated the UH-60 Black Hawk and spawning a large family in U.S. military service.

New and improved versions of the UH-60 have been developed since. Civilian versions, and some military versions are produced under various S-70 model designations.

  1. It is excellent that the Dept. of National Defence and the Phil. Air Force are acquiring new helicopter assets and even exerting efforts to increase the numbers of UH-1H Huey’s but it is also equally important to maintain and especially reactivate existing units that has been in storage. Like the subject matter on hand, the S70-A5 wherein two units where acquired in 1984. The non-functioning unit should be reactivated. Remember these are excellent workhorses, which are also the variant of the US Blackhawk. Another helicopter that also should be reactivated back to service is the non-functioning units of the Sikorsky S-76 which I think 7 units are in storage. These mentioned models could greatly add to the uplift capacity of the helicopter unit of PAF to at least 8 refurbished units. Moreover, the DND & PAF should exert all efforts to create a budget for the year-round maintenance, repair & spare parts. Previously, due to meager and or non-existing funds the Air Force is forced to cannibalize other helicopters which greatly diminishes the operational units. “DND & PAF should never again let this happen considering the political climate now with China”.
