The Australian government has signed a AUD3.1 billion (USD2.7 billion) contract with Tenix Defence for the construction of two 27,000 LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) amphibious ships based on the BPE strategic projection ship designed by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia.

The LHDs, to be delivered in 2013 and 2015, will be the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) largest-ever ships. They will replace the heavy landing ship HMAS Tobruk and one of the RAN's two amphibious transports (LPAs).
