Severnoye Project Design Bureau (Russia) under repair, overhaul and upgrade the unique BPS-500 missile boats of  Vietnam Navy.

BPS-500 - patrol boat carrying anti-ship missiles as Vietnam's first domestically built themselves with the support of Russia, after a long period of service, start repairs and restoration to continue comprehensive operational for several more years.

Under contract with JSC Rosoboronexport in 2013, the Severnoye Project Bureau of Russia has started work to support the re-engineering of repair and upgrade missile patrol boats BPS-500 only for the Vietnam Navy, this information has been confirmed in the 2013 financial statements of the company.

Thus, it can be stated only ship missiles BPS-500 under the project KBO 2000 that Vietnam built from the late 1990s are being overhauled and upgraded to be able to restore operability and new combat strength.

Recall that the KBO 2000 is a joint project between the Russian military shipbuilding and Vietnam, which is representative by Russian Severnoye Project Design Bureau (SPKB), in this project, SPKB was involved in design scheme of missile corvette BPS-500 as required by the Vietnam Navy.

BPS-ship missile for the first 500 of which were built at a shipyard in Ho Chi Minh city (probably Ba Son factory) with the technical support and supply of equipment, components and accessories parts from Russia. According to Jane's article in 3/1999 then BPS-500 has been completed, launched and is undergoing sea trials.

However, after first ship of BPS-500 completedt, Vietnam has stopped this shipbuilding program, cause some foreign media for the design of the BPS-500 is outdated, not meet the requirements set forth or Vietnam can not compare to the ability of the class Project 1241.8 Molniya missile boat, so the project was canceled. The BPS-500 is closed and is only served in the Navy's 162 Brigade with HQ-381 hull number.

Small missile ship BPS-500 has 62 m long, 11 m wide, water displacement of 520 tons full load, crew of 50 people. The ship is equipped with the diesel engine speed of 30 knots/h, 30-day journey reserves.

Electronic systems on board Pozitiv ME multimode radar reconnaissance and aerial targets at sea, has a reconnaissance range  of over 100 km, can detect flying targets with area of radar cross section (RCS) 1 m2 fly at 1,000 m from the 11 km, detecting anti-ship missiles have 0.03 m2 RCS at an altitude of 15km 15m away. Radar can track 15 targets at the same time, lock 3-5 target. In addition, systems also ship fire control radar gun and rocket fire and communications systems.

In terms of firepower, BPS-500 equipped with AK-176 naval cannon, 8 anti-ship cruise missiles Uran-E (130km range), 2 anti-aircraft artillery emplacements AK-630, combination of low altitude air defense missile Igla and 2 x 12.7 mm gun.

It should be noted that, Severnoe Russian design institute has also recently introduced a new variant of BPS-500 corvette with more powerful configurable weapons than the HQ-381 ship of Vietnam Navy. Accordingly, the new variant is equipped with A-190E naval gun caliber 100 mm instead of  AK-176 mm and is equipped with anti-submarine torpedo Paket-E (new torpedo system and modern most of the Russian Navy). With these improvements, new variant corvette BPS-500 will have superior strength, more versatile instead of just floating anti-ship function.
