Singapore shipbuilder ST Marine is positioning the company's Fearless 75 design for Australia's SEA 1180 Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) programme, the company told IHS Jane's at the Pacific 2015 international maritime exhibition and conference in Sydney on 6 October.
The Fearless 75 is a longer variant of the 55 m Fearless-class vessels currently in service with the Republic of Singapore Navy and built by ST Marine. Singapore currently operates a fleet of 11 such ships that were commissioned between 1996 and 1998.
"The Fearless 75 is a proven platform and we have had a long history of building such vessels," said Siow Chee Kiang, ST Marine's vice-president for marketing and branding, who also highlighted the Royal Omani Navy's (RON's) Al-Ofouq-class patrol vessel as a successful implementation of the Fearless 75 design. ST Marine clinched a SGD880 million (USD640 million) contract in April 2012 to construct four vessels for the RON. The service has, to date, taken delivery of two hulls.
The Fearless 75 design displaces approximately 1,100 tonnes and accommodates a crew of about 60 including officers. The platform has a top speed of 27 kt and can attain a standard range of 3,000 n miles at 16 kt. The design provides for the installation of a 76 mm cannon as a primary weapon.
"Besides a launch and recovery system for rigid hull inflatable boats at stern, the platform can also be configured to carry helicopters or unmanned aerial vehicles on the flight deck," said Siow who also pointed to the platform's mission bay as an important component that will meet the Royal Australian Navy's future needs.
