Malaysian firm AVP Engineering and South Korea's Doosan DST have teamed to offer the latter's Black Fox 6x6 wheeled armoured vehicle to the Malaysian Army, the companies confirmed to IHS Jane's at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2016 exhibition.
Officials said the vehicle is being pitched as a possible replacement for the army's SIBMAS armoured personnel carriers, which have been in service since the early 1980s. This vehicle is scheduled to be replaced by the Deftech 8x8 AV8 Gempita armoured fighting vehicle, which is currently in production. However, officials said it is possible that Malaysia will also pursue the procurement a 6x6 vehicle.
An official from AVP said the teaming arrangement is focused on co-production of Black Fox components in Malaysia following technology transfers in order to comply with Malaysia's increasing emphasis on localised involvement in defence procurement programmes. "The scope of technology transfers has not been finalised yet," said one official, who did not want to be identified. "However, we have agreed to build elements of the Black Fox in Malaysia if we can secure a contract."
The officials also confirmed that the companies were in the process of securing trials with the Malaysian Army in order to promote the capabilities of the vehicle, which has previously been exported to the Indonesian Army, where it is referred to as the Tarantula.
The 6x6 Black Fox features all-wheel steering, with a gross vehicle weight of up to 18 tonnes. The vehicle is powered by a Cummins 400 hp diesel engine coupled to an automatic transmission.

Kelambatan tawaran nya, malaysia sudah deal dulu dgn turki FNSS 8x8, di malaysia dipanggil gempita. Ada versi 6x6 juga..klu malaysia mau gantikan sibmas pasti yg dipilih 6x6 versi sama dgn varian gempita. Ngak perlu tambah type lain yg berbeza pembuatannya.
