The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is expecting to receive its large patrol vessels ordered from Japan in 2022 after the contract for the said acquisition was signed today, February 7 with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.

“We are making a milestone – not just for the Department of Transportation and PCG, but also for the Philippines – acquiring the first-ever biggest ships for the Coast Guard,” PCG Commandant, Admiral Joel Garcia said.

Prior to contract signing today, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has awarded Mitsubishi Shipbuilding a contract worth JPY14,550,000,000.00 to design, build, and deliver two 94-meter Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs) for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) last January 17.

The acquisition is funded through a loan provided by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project (MSCIP) for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Phase II.

“The modernization of the PCG has been going fast and quick and very meaningful. In fact, in this effort to make it quick, fast, and very meaningful, the government of Japan has contributed very much,” DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade said.

According to NEDA, “the project involves the acquisition of two (2) heavy weather, high endurance 94-meter Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs), to provide the PCG with vessels with a cruising range capability of 4,000 nautical miles, can be used in Sea-State 6 (wave height of up to 6 meters) in rough sea condition, and are capable to conduct continuous maritime patrol up to 15 days at 15 knots.”
