Kementerian Pertahanan Indonesia telah mengusulkan agar dua kapal fregat ‘Merah Putih’ di masa depan akan dilengkapi dengan sejumlah sistem tempur pilihan, termasuk rudal, yang bersumber dari Turkiye.
Dokumen yang diberikan kepada Janes oleh sumber angkatan laut saat berkunjung ke Surabaya menegaskan bahwa proposal ini akan secara efektif merevisi rencana sebelumnya yang memerlukan daftar pemasok senjata yang lebih beragam.
Indonesia menandatangani kontrak untuk dua fregat ‘Merah Putih’ dengan pembuat kapal milik negara PT PAL pada bulan April 2020. Fregat tersebut dibangun dengan desain Arrowhead 140 yang disediakan oleh kelompok pertahanan Inggris Babcock berdasarkan perjanjian lisensi.

Desain Arrowhead 140 Babcock basisnya didasarkan pada tiga kapal kelas Iver Huitfeldt milik Angkatan Laut Kerajaan Denmark, yang ditugaskan antara Januari dan November 2011.
Lunas kapal fregat pertama dipasang pada Agustus 2023, sedangkan pemotongan baja untuk kapal kedua dilakukan pertama kali pada 5 Juni 2024.
Setiap kapal perang akan berbobot sekitar 5.996 ton dengan muatan penuh dan memiliki panjang keseluruhan 140 m.
Kapal perang tersebut masing-masing dirancang untuk mengakomodasi sistem peluncuran vertikal (VLS) 12 sel untuk rudal permukaan-ke-udara (SAM) jarak menengah, VLS 12 sel terpisah untuk SAM jarak jauh, dan VLS 16 sel untuk SAM jarak jauh. rudal permukaan-ke-permukaan (SSM), dua senjata angkatan laut 76 mm, dan sistem senjata jarak dekat (CIWS) 35 mm.
Dokumen yang diberikan kepada Janes menunjukkan bahwa Kementerian Pertahanan Indonesia sebelumnya telah merencanakan SAM menjadi sistem VL-MICA dari MBDA sedangkan SSM direncanakan menjadi rudal anti-kapal BrahMos dari BrahMos Aerospace.
