Rafael has given the Philippines Department of National Defense (DND) a proposal for equipping the Philippine Navy's BRP Alcaraz with missile systems, according to the website Interaksyon.com, which cited a source in the Philippine Navy.
The BRP Alcaraz, which was purchased by the US Coast Guard and was renovated by the Philippine navy, is not equipped with any missile systems because "according to the US Foreign Military Sales agreement, arming a vessel with sophisticated weapons such as missiles requires the approval of the US congress." Furthermore, the source added that these weapons are very expensive and were not included in the plans for acquiring the ship.
While it lacks missile systems, the Alcaraz is equipped with two Bushmaster 25mm systems for defense purposes. However, according to the source, it seems that the BRP Gregorio del Pilar (which was also acquired from the US Coast Guard) will apparently be the first to be equipped with an advanced missile system.
