The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is seeking to upgrade its Kedah-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) with a new radar system and additional weapon systems, according to Navy Chief Admiral Aziz Jaafar.

Adm Aziz told reporters on 15 April that the service had requested funding for the upgrade and that the priority would be a replacement to the current EADS TRS-3D/16ES G-band radar, followed by the installation of a surface-to-surface missile (SSM) system. The Kedah class currently only carries a 76 mm main gun and a 30 mm secondary gun.

The RMN will conduct evaluations for the selection of the radar and SSM if funding is approved, said Adm Aziz, adding that if the allocated funds permit it, the RMN would also install a surface-to-air missile system.
