House rep seeks US donation of ship named after Battle of the Philippine Sea
MANILA — A congressman is asking the US government to donate guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG58) to the Philippines when it is decommissioned, saying doing so would be “apropos and relevant” to issues in the West Philippine Sea.
“I am sure that it will be a big asset in our efforts to defend our territorial waters, our sovereign rights, and our personnel and fishermen from intruders,” Cagayan De Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said in a release Tuesday.
He said he has written to US State Secretary Antony Blinken, US Defense Secretary Lloyd James Austin III and US Ambassador to Manila MaryKay Carlson about the request.
The ship, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser, is the second US Navy ship named after the World War II Battle of the Philippine Sea and is "projected for inactivation" in Fiscal Year 2025, according to the Naval News website.
USS Leyte Gulf (CG55), another missile cruiser named after a World War II naval battle in the Philippines, was decommissioned in September.
Rodriguez said, the donation “will be a very good gesture and it will further strengthen the iron-clad commitment and strong friendship between the United States of America and the Philippines.”
The Philippine military has made upgrading its external defense capabilities a priority amid tension in the West Philippine Sea.

PT Pindad (Persero) telah cukup lama menggeluti penjualan ekspor. Terhitung mulai 2006 Pindad mulai menggiatkan ekspornya ke beberapa negara seperti Kamboja dan Nigeria untuk senapan serbu, Malaysia dan Australia untuk penanganan huru-hara, Korea Selatan, Singapura, Timor Leste, Filipina untuk amunisi, Laos untuk senjata dan amunisi, dan beberapa negara lainnya di kawasan Asia dengan rata-rata penjualan per tahun di kisaran 5 juta USD. Peristiwanya telah berlangsung pada bulan Februari lalu, namun baru saat ini PT PAL Indonesia atas restu dari Angkatan Laut Uni Emirat Arab (UEA) mengumumkan upacara seremonial proyek Landing Platform Dock (LPD) 163M Al Maryah. Dalam siaran pers (17/10), Indonesia dan Uni Emirat Arab (UEA) memperkuat hubungan bilateral melalui serangkaian kerja sama strategis. Salah satunya ditandai dengan Upacara Pemotongan Baja Pertama LPD Al Maryah pada 28 Februari 2024 di bengkel PT PAL Indonesia.

Dipimpin langsung oleh Brigadir Staf Abdullah Faraj Al Mehairbi, Wakil Panglima Angkatan Laut UEA, dan CEO PT PAL Indonesia Kaharuddin Djenod. Acara ini menandai berlanjutnya kerja sama internasional dalam pengembangan kapal jenis LPD.
Ini menjadi proyek pengadaan alutsista terbesar Indonesia untuk Angkatan Laut UEA. Direktur Utama PT PAL Indonesia, menyambut baik kehadiran tamu istimewa yang hadir dalam acara tersebut dan menyampaikan bahwa, “Kerja sama kedua negara merupakan cerminan bagaimana kedua negara saling berkontribusi dalam menjaga keamanan kawasan Internasional dalam menghadapi ketegangan geopolitik agar menjadi kokoh, stabil, dan saling mendukung.” Selain itu, ia memastikan bahwa “PT PAL berkomitmen untuk menjaga kepercayaan, kualitas, dan memberikan hasil terbaik dalam pembangunan Landing Platform Dock milik UEA”.
