Australia’s first AH-64E Apache attack helicopters commenced flying operations in Townsville this week.

The commencement of flying operations is a significant step in the introduction of the Apache and marks the completion of acceptance, airworthiness and assurance activities to ensure the safe operation of the aircraft.

Commander of Army Aviation Command, Major General David Hafner, AM CSC, said the achievement of this important milestone reflected the dedication and professionalism all personnel involved in the transition to Apache.

“The commencement of AH-64E Apache flying operations is a tremendous achievement for Army and the Defence aviation enterprise, which is currently undertaking a generational uplift in Army’s battlefield aviation capability,” Major General Hafner said.

“Our team has been working hard to qualify air and ground crews, deliver essential support systems, and conduct maintenance and logistics activities, which are essential to operation of the Townsville-based attack helicopter fleet.

“It also reflects the strength of our partnership with the United States and United Kingdom, whose support in training and qualifying our personnel ensures they are fully prepared to operate this advanced capability.”

Army pilots will now conduct a progressive flying program designed to validate Australian operating procedures and training requirements.

AH-64E Apache deliveries commenced in September 2025, with four aircraft now delivered to Australia. The delivery of the Apache provides the Integrated Force with a lethal, connected and protected attack aviation capability that can operate across a range of land and amphibious environments.

Head of Joint Aviation Systems Division, Major General Jeremy King, CSM, said the milestone marked the realisation of Townsville as Australia’s Army aviation hub.

“Defence’s investment in North Queensland, in support of the Apache fleet, will generate significant training and employment opportunities for local people and businesses as we build a capable, robust and resilient industry base to support Army’s growing battlefield aviation capabilities,” Major General King said.

“As Australia’s Apache fleet grows, so too will our integrated workforce. Our military workforce will continue to gradually transition from Tiger to Apache, supported by specialist contracted and industry personnel.”

The AH-64E Apache delivers Defence a proven, mature attack helicopter. Operating from Hamel Lines at RAAF Base Townsville alongside the CH-47F Chinook fleet, it enables Army to generate, sustain and deploy a stronger and more resilient helicopter capability.
