Melbourne Artificial Intelligence (AI) specialist Sentient Vision Systems has won a $2.1 million Australian government grant to establish a sovereign in-house manufacturing facility for its world-leading ViDAR search and surveillance pods.
The grant was awarded under the Department of Industry Science Energy and Resources’ (DISER) Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI) Translation Stream. It will enable volume manufacture in Australia of the company’s ViDAR pods for Australian and export customers.
“Winning this grant is an important step for Sentient Vision Systems,” said the company’s Managing Director and founder, Dr Paul Boxer. “We’ve been developing software-based AI surveillance systems for nearly two decades. We’ll soon be able to manufacture our own hardware in larger quantities as well whilst maintaining control over their quality and supply for critical surveillance and safety missions.”
ViDAR stands for Visual Detection And Ranging and is the world’s first passive optical radar. It is mounted in crewed and uncrewed fixed and rotary winged aircraft and uses Sentient AI (a powerful combination of deep learning and advanced computer vision) to scan every pixel in every frame of an optical sensor’s imagery feed to detect objects invisible to a human operator, at sea or over land. When it detects an object the ViDAR software places a thumbnail on the Mission Management System (MMS) screen so the operator can examine it in detail. ViDAR is used for Search and Rescue (SAR), wide area surveillance, border security, and law enforcement by customers worldwide, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Australian Navy, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and many other allied organisations and agencies.
The ViDAR VMS pods were launched in 2021 to provide complete integrated pod systems for rapid fitment to a wide range of crewed and uncrewed fixed and rotary winged aircraft, and for easy integration with the aircraft’s MMS. At present the company hand-builds pods in Australia and with partners in Canada and Europe.
Thanks to the new facility, Sentient Vision Systems will be able to quickly meet the growing global demand for VIDAR pod systems to suit surveillance aircraft, ships and drones employed in different missions.

"Pada hari itu, pesawat operasional-taktis Angkatan Udara Rusia menyerang dua pos komando, 9 markas tingkat perusahaan dan area pengumpulan tenaga kerja dan peralatan militer serta 5 depot amunisi dan bahan bakar," kata Konashenkov. Konashenkov juga mengatakan bahwa pasukan rudal dan artileri menyerang 319 area tempat pengumpulan tenaga dan peralatan militer musuh, 12 pos komando dan dua senjata rudal/artileri dan depot amunisi. Ia juga menjelaskan, hampir 2.700 tank Ukraina dan kendaraan lapis baja lainnya, serta 2.503 kendaraan bermotor militer khusus telah dimusnahkan sejak dimulainya operasi militer khusus Rusia di Ukraina. "Secara keseluruhan, target berikut telah dihilangkan sejak dimulainya operasi militer khusus: 2.678 tank dan kendaraan lapis baja tempur lainnya, serta 2.503 kendaraan bermotor khusus militer," kata juru bicara itu. Konashenkov menambahkan, 143 pesawat, 112 helikopter, 660 kendaraan udara tak berawak, 279 sistem rudal permukaan-ke-udara, 308 sistem peluncuran roket ganda, 1.196 senjata artileri lapangan dan mortir telah dibawa keluar. Pasukan pertahanan udara Rusia telah menembak jatuh pesawat serang Su-25 Ukraina di Wilayah Kherson serta 12 roket dari sistem roket peluncuran ganda Smerch di Republik Rakyat Donetsk (DPR), kata Konashenkov. “Sistem pertahanan udara Rusia menembak jatuh Su-25 milik Angkatan Udara Ukraina di dekat Chervony Yar di Wilayah Kherson,” kata juru bicara itu. Menurut Konashenkov, dua kendaraan udara tak berawak Ukraina dihancurkan di atas Vladimirovka dan "12 roket dari beberapa sistem peluncuran roket Smerch dicegat di dekat Kamenka di Republik Rakyat Donetsk.". "On that day, operational-tactical aircraft of the Russian Air Force attacked two command posts, 9 corporate-level headquarters and gathering areas for manpower and military equipment as well as 5 ammunition and fuel depots," Konashenkov said. Konashenkov also said that missile and artillery troops attacked 319 areas where enemy military personnel and equipment were gathered, 12 command posts and two missile/artillery weapons and ammunition depots. He also explained that nearly 2,700 Ukrainian tanks and other armored vehicles, as well as 2,503 special military motor vehicles had been destroyed since the start of Russia's special military operations in Ukraine. "In all, the following targets have been eliminated since the start of special military operations: 2,678 tanks and other combat armored vehicles, as well as 2,503 special military motor vehicles," the spokesman said. Konashenkov added that 143 aircraft, 112 helicopters, 660 unmanned aerial vehicles, 279 surface-to-air missilesystems, 308 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,196 field artillery guns and mortars had been brought out. Russian air defense forces have shot down a Ukrainian Su-25 attack aircraft in the Kherson Region as well as 12 rockets from the Smerch multiple launch rocket system in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Konashenkov said. "Russian air defense systems shot down a Su-25 belonging to the Ukrainian Air Force near Chervony Yar in the Kherson Region," the spokesman said. According to Konashenkov, two Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were destroyed over Vladimirovka and "12 rockets from several Smerch rocket launch systems were intercepted near Kamenka in the Donetsk People's Republic.". Russian air-launched precision missiles hit 17 Ukrainian military sites, including five artillery deployments and several rocket launch systems. "Air-launched precision missiles delivered strikes to 17 Ukrainian military targets during the day," Konashenkov said. In particular, eight Ukrainian military personnel and equipment gathering areas, five artillery emplacements and several rocket launch systems, as well as two fortifications, were hit by Russian attacks. "Also, a command post and storage facility with rockets and artillery guns was destroyed near Pokrovskoye in the Dnepropetrovsk Region," he added.
