Indian Army to Test New Weapon-Locating Radar

The Indian Army says it is almost ready to start testing a newly developed weapon-locating radar (WLR), designed and developed by Bangalore-based defence research and development organisation Lab Electronics and Radar Development Establishment.

The company's director, S Varadarajan, said that the system should be ready for full production by 2012.

"The radar can look at objects from 30km away, locate rockets and even give the trajectory to give an early warning," he said.

The Indian Army is likely to place an order for the delivery of 29 WLRs worth $320m (Rs1,500 crore).

The foliage radar is an airborne radar that can detect objects 20km-30km away and can be deployed for internal security and help in low-intensity conflicts such as those resorted to by terrorists and insurgents.
