KUALA LUMPUR : The government signed contracts worth RM357.2 million for the Armed Forces at the Defence Services Asia 2012 exhibition today.
Four of the contracts worth RM250.8 million are for the supply of ammunition, rocket propelled grenades, disposable light anti-tank weapons and smoke grenade launchers for the Malaysian Army.
The other contract is for the supply of 35 RVV-AE medium range missiles worth RM106.4 million for the Royal Malaysian Air Force's Sukhoi Su-30MKM multi-role combat aircraft.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi witnessed the signing ceremony.
Ahmad Zahid told reporters later that the value of the contracts signed this year was lower as the ministry was aware that the government’s priority was socio-economic programmes, not big ticket items for the military.
He said the five contracts signed today, was to maintain the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces, while the modernisation of assets would be based on the government’s financial allocation.
Meanwhile, Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd signed a contract for the supply, delivery and installation of a Scaneagle Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System from Insitu Pacific Pty Ltd.
The unmanned air vehicle worth RM10 million, will be used for border surveillance in Sabah.
Eleven memorandum of understanding worth some RM5 billion was also signed at the event.
