5 Juni 1996

The Royal Cambodian Air Force has taken delivery of its first two second-hand Aero L-39 Albatros advanced trainer aircraft from Israel, with two more delivered this month and the final two in July.

The L-39 acquisition is part of a broader deal, worth about $15million, with Israel's IAI. The other part of the agreement involves maintenance work to make nine of Cambodia's 19 Mikoyan MiG-21fighters operational - with the remaining 10 MiG-21s left at Phnom Penh's Pochentong airport.

The first of these nine fighters to be reconditioned is due for delivery in about 10 months. The L-39 and MiG-21 programmes have been delayed by disagreement sover payment, and problems acquiring the used L-39 platforms after an initial purchase deal with a third country fell through.
