Drone launch marks innovation milestone
The successful launch of an air delivery drone, known as Aladdin, from a C-130J Hercules has demonstrated how emerging technologies can be rapidly integrated into Air Force capability.

Conducted during Exercise Jericho Dawn in Cultana, South Australia, the launch marked a milestone for Air Force innovation by moving a prototype capability beyond the laboratory and into a military operating environment.

As technology advances at an unprecedented pace, maintaining a competitive edge depends on Defence’s ability to quickly identify, test and field new capabilities. The successful integration of Aladdin represents a tangible step towards that objective.

Exercise Jericho Dawn aimed to speed up the transition of new technologies from concept to operational use. To achieve this, the exercise brought together Air Force, industry and academia to test a range of maturing systems in realistic field conditions.

Officer in Charge of Exercise Jericho Dawn Wing Commander Keirin Joyce said the exercise existed to challenge conventional approaches and rapidly explore solutions to emerging capability needs.

“Air Force, like any service, has gaps and opportunities that it needs to tackle every year and that’s Jericho’s job to identify those gaps, identify where there are opportunities and to go challenge them,” Wing Commander Joyce said.

The centrepiece of the activity was Aladdin.

'Aladdin brings a whole range of new capabilities to Defence and potentially into the civil sector for search and rescue, disaster relief, military resupply, tactical resupply and support to land elements.'

Launched from the back of a C-130J Hercules, Aladdin is a low-cost uncrewed aerial system. It is capable of delivering up to 35 kilograms of communication equipment, relief supplies and other critical payloads with pinpoint accuracy on land or at sea.

Stabilising mid-air and landing safely, Aladdin demonstrated its ability to deploy from a military platform and deliver supplies in austere environments.

Being no bigger than a wheelie bin, this capability has the potential to solve a growing operational challenge – delivering critical supplies across increasingly contested and logistically complex places.

Wing Commander Paul Hay, rapid capability development project manager for Aladdin, said the system created new options for commanders while reducing pressure on high-demand assets.

“Aladdin brings a whole range of new capabilities to Defence and potentially into the civil sector for search and rescue, disaster relief, military resupply, tactical resupply and support to land elements,” Wing Commander Hay said.

“It also enables us to autonomously land parts on a ship underway at sea.”

For Exercise Jericho Dawn, this outcome represented more than the successful launch of a drone. It demonstrated the increasingly important ability to integrate and operationalise innovation to ensure the future force adapts as quickly as the strategic environment demands.

Acting Commander Fleet Air Arm Captain Samuel Dale highlighted the significance of modern infrastructure in enabling Defence to adapt to an increasingly complex operating environment.

“These facilities are about more than buildings, they provide the foundation for our people to safely operate, maintain and integrate the next generation of Defence capabilities,” Captain Dale said.

“As our systems evolve, so too must the environments in which our personnel train and work.”

Mr Marles spoke about the recently released 2026 National Defence Strategy and the Government’s investment in autonomous and uncrewed capabilities to enhance Australia’s defence readiness and resilience.

“Autonomous systems will play an increasingly important role in our future force, but technology alone does not deliver capability,” Mr Marles said.

“Our people remain our greatest asset, and investing in them is essential to ensuring these systems achieve their full potential.”

Commanding Officer 822X Squadron Commander Jeffery Choat acknowledged the dedication of the squadron’s workforce and the important role they play in delivering capability outcomes.

“We may be a small team of just 53 personnel, but the professionalism, innovation and commitment demonstrated by our people every day is what makes 822X Squadron successful,” Commander Choat said.

“This facility will help us continue delivering for Defence well into the future.”

Australian Army Uses New AI Drone on Exercise Southern Jackaroo

09 Juli 2026

One of Army’s newest fixed‑wing reconnaissance drones took flight on Exercise Southern Jackaroo, identifying targets in depth and enabling drone and artillery strikes on enemy positions.

The Vector AI, made by Quantum Systems, can map environments in real time and uses AI-enhanced software to detect and track objects while flying more than 60 kilometres.

Drone pilot Corporal Harrison Hinson, of 2nd Cavalry Regiment, said his unit would normally identify the enemy through mounted and dismounted reconnaissance using direct observation.

“This also means that we would be putting our soldiers in direct fire range and at risk of compromise,” Corporal Hinson said.

“With our employment of drones, we have one more tool at our disposal to enhance our reconnaissance and strike capabilities.”

Having flown fixed-wing drones since 2022, Corporal Hinson focused on understanding the new platform’s strengths, limitations and capabilities.

The Vector AI, with a wingspan of 2.8 metres, uses tiltrotors, similar to the MV-22 Osprey, to transition between vertical and forward flight, giving it the hovering capability of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft.

“The flying side is quite easy if you have flown other systems,” Corporal Hinson said.

Because fixed-wing drones can penetrate deeper into enemy lines, they excel at providing information that helps friendly forces disrupt rear elements, degrading an enemy’s ability to coordinate and resupply forward units.

That same information shortens kill chains – the steps taken to find targets and destroy them – enabling faster offensive action.

Corporal Hinson said offensive use of the technologies had informed how they operated defensively.

“We have to assume we are always being observed and need to better ourselves on how to hide or disguise our signatures,” he said.

The Vector AI comes from a lineage of drones used in Ukraine and other conflicts, with each upgrade shaped by thousands of mission hours across global military operations.

Operations Squadron Start Operating Skydio X10 UAS

18 Februari 2026

Skydio X10 UAS (photo: NZDF)

New Uncrewed Aerial System a game changer for RNZAF Base Ohakea

Operations Squadron are now planning for the Skydio X10 to be used across Security Forces, Aviation Rescue Fire Flight and airfield management.

Constructed of plastic and carbon fibre, the Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS) weighs about 2kg and comes equipped with thermal imaging, the ability to photograph and map 3D objects, and is designed to be able to carry spotlights, a speaker and sensors clipped to the frame.

“We can map infrastructure and aircraft by taking numerous photos using an automated mapping flight plan. We then upload those photos to cloud software that will form a larger 3D map,” airfield manager Paul Smillie said.

For aircraft maintenance, this can eliminate the need for personnel to inspect aircraft using cherry-pickers to spot defects in hard-to-reach areas. The gimbled camera can also swivel and take images from underneath the aircraft.

Operations Squadron units will work together to ensure the UAS can be used alongside core work.

The UAS can also provide live video back to an operations centre on the ground, he said.

“It could also be used for security forces tracking an insider threat. We can fly it remotely from up to 12km away and provide them with the live footage they need without putting any of their people at risk.”

Another safety aspect of the UAS that’s valuable at a busy airfield is its sensors. It detects aircraft transponder systems, which transmit their GPS position, and informs the controller.

Mr Smillie said UAS technology was evolving and it would likely soon play a more dominant role in military capability. One potential was for UAS to be housed in secure, weather-proof docks located in remote areas and controlled from the base.

“It can be programmed to go at the same time, every day, every week.”

Increasingly utilising UAS capabilities on the base was going to be an interesting journey, Mr Smillie said.

“We'll be working with a regulator to allow better-use cases at an aerodrome. It's got some good safety features, so with the mitigation those bring we can look at flying closer to active runways.”

Australia Opens Drone Faclity at RAAF Base Tindal for Northern Defense

16 Februari 2026

Triton facility opening RAAF Base Tindal (photos: Aus DoD)

Strengthening northern air power

The recent completion of the new MQ‑4C Triton facilities at RAAF Base Tindal is a major boost to Australia’s northern air power and marks a significant milestone for Defence with the introduction of next‑generation uncrewed capability.

Opened by Assistant Minister for Defence Peter Khalil, the $355.7 million AIR7000 Phase 1B Project has delivered purpose‑built facilities to support the MQ‑4C Triton, including maintenance hangars, new airfield pavements, working accommodation and essential supporting infrastructure.

During the opening ceremony, Mr Khalil praised the collaboration between Defence and industry partners, acknowledging their essential role in strengthening Australia’s defence posture.

“What you see here is a whole‑of‑country effort,” Mr Khalil said.

“Industry, Defence, contractors and our men and women in uniform working together towards a common goal – protecting our national interests.”

Commencing construction in May 2023, the project was designed by BVN architects and delivered by Sitzler Pty Ltd, with Jacobs Pty Ltd engaged as the project manager and contract administrator. The project injected more than $166 million into Northern Territory businesses through awarded work packages, with a significant amount directed to Indigenous subcontractors.

Mr Khalil highlighted that this milestone ensured Defence was better positioned to deliver on the priorities outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy, such as strengthening northern bases and enhancing Defence’s ability to respond to evolving security challenges.

“The defence of Australia’s national interests depends on our ability to protect and monitor the northern maritime approaches,” Mr Khalil said.

“The work the Tritons will do contributes directly to the security and stability of our region, and that underpins the prosperity of our nation as a trading country.”

'It provides us with our permanent home at RAAF Base Tindal – a facility that has been designed, conceived and built with our people in mind, and will serve the squadron for many years to come.'

While the Triton aircraft will be operated remotely by aircrew from 9 Squadron based at RAAF Base Edinburgh, they will be launched, recovered and maintained at RAAF Base Tindal. The newly formed squadron will occupy the facility, supported by Northrop Grumman Australia.

Commander Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group Air Commodore Michael Durant stated that a key attribute of the MQ-4C Triton was its ability to operate independently, and from a range of locations.

“The Triton does not need the controllers to be co-located with the aircraft itself,” Air Commodore Durant said.

“Our intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) hub at RAAF Base Edinburgh provides the ideal location for 9 Squadron aircrew to access and integrate with our full range of ISR capabilities.”

Air Commodore Durant emphasised that the new facilities were established at RAAF Base Tindal for several key reasons, including enabling operations within our primary area of strategic interest and supporting the priorities outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy.

“Locating the aircraft inland at RAAF Base Tindal provides a northern operating position while also reducing our exposure to the coastal weather systems that frequently affect northern Australia,” Air Commodore Durant said.

Commanding Officer 9 Squadron Wing Commander Neale Thompson said the completion of the new facility also marked an important milestone for the squadron.

“It’s incredibly satisfying to see this facility finished,” Wing Commander Thompson said.

“It provides us with our permanent home at RAAF Base Tindal – a facility that has been designed, conceived and built with our people in mind, and will serve the squadron for many years to come.”
