There was a picture rolling out April 26, 2016 at Boeing's plant in Renton (WA) of the first built in Australia Boeing P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft (Australian tail number A47-001, serial number 62288, serial number  5823). The aircraft to be delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force beginning in 2017.

Australia within the framework of Project Air 7000 Phase 2B, in October 2012 signed an agreement with the US Department of Defense to purchase through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) eight new patrol aircraft Boeing P-8A Poseidon worth 4 billion Australian dollars (about 3.6 billion USD). The agreement also included an option for another four aircraft, translated into a firm contract in January 2016. Eight ordered and the first aircraft to be delivered from the beginning of 2017 to the end of 2018, and four options - after 2020.

Aircraft P-8A will go into service in two squadrons of the 92nd Wing RAAF Australia AFB Edinburgh, replacing the currently operating the wing base patrol aircraft Lockheed P-3C Orion. As published in early 2016 by the Australian Government "White Paper on Defense".

On 2016 Defence White Paper, government intention to buy three aircraft P-8A after 2020, bringing the total in the Royal Australian Air Force to 15. Australia has become the second foreign customer family aircraft P-8 after India received in 2013-2015 eight aircraft P-8I and ordered four more. In 2016, Britain should be concluded an agreement to acquire nine aircraft P-8A.
