Hyundai Heavy Industries has revealed further details of the two frigates that it will build for the Philippine Navy. The platform is slightly smaller than anticipated, but said to inherit main design features of South Korea's Incheon class (image : HHI)

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has given further details of the two frigates that it will be constructing for the Philippine Navy (PN).

The details were given in a media release on 24 October announcing that the contract to build the ships has been formally signed with Philippine defence secretary Delfin Lorenzana. HHI received a notice of the PHP15,744,571,584 (USD311 million) award earlier in 2016.

The company was previously reported to have won the contract with a design based on the company's HDF-3000 multipurpose frigate design, which features an overall length of 114.3 m, and has been used as the basis for the Republic of Korea Navy's (RoKN's) Incheon (FFX-I)-class guided-missile frigates.

HHI has since disclosed in its media release that the platform will instead feature overall length of 107 m, a standard displacement of about 2,600 tonnes, and an operational survivability up to Sea State 5. The frigate has however been described by HHI as one that inherits main design features of the Incheon class, albeit with a lighter displacement.

The ship will feature a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion system, and feature a maximum speed of 25 kt, with a standard range of 4,500 n miles at 15 kt.

HHI did not disclose in writing specific details of the platform's weapon systems, saying only that the frigates will be "heavily armed with missiles, torpedo, guns and sensors", and that they will be capable of anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine and electronic warfare.

However a computer generated image of the platform accompanying the media release shows an eight-cell vertical launching system (VLS) installed at the forward section, just behind the platform's primary weapon that will most likely be a 76 mm naval gun.

  1. i almost laugh at the heavily armed part. However we are talking about philippine here so i think this ship is already a huge leap for their navy.

    2. vl mica is better than mistral though i agree its still insufficient for air defence but both sigma and sgpv are not meant for aaw to begin with.at least the sigma have 12 mica and sgpv 16 mica comparing to pinoy frigate with 4 mistral. our frigate is equip with 8 anti-ship missile instead of 4 on the pinoy's. 8 exocet/nsm with range of 180 km compared to 4 c-star with 160km. you will think again if you say our frigate is just the same as them. that's why i say this frigate is a huge leap for the pinoy navy but comparing to other navy in asean, they are still behind. im happy that they will have this new frigates but the statement from hyundai that they are heavily armed make me want to laugh a little.

  2. Lol. How can they call this thing heavily arm warship. 8 SAM,4 SSM. Unless the missile is Brahmos the ship is not heavily arm. And the top speed is only 25knot? This thing is more of a large corvette than a light frigrate. And the bridge reminds me of that Malaysian frigate but not so boxy looking.

  6. Why are you always repeat the same thing? FYI Sigma has 2 version, the corvette and frigate. If you compare Sigma corvette than yes Incheon is SLIGHTLY better. Beside the Sigma is design by MORE proven and experience shipbuilder. Beside i think the one that is envy is you. Indonesian and Malaysian has the capacity to build locally made ship with assistance from foreign country. Even Thailand newest locally made frigate has far better armament. The agreement should include transfer of technology even if the ship is not made locally. Well i quest you get what you pay for.

  7. you do realise that the frigate you are buying is much lesser armed than the incheon. so when you compare the incheon class with the sgpv and sigma, it is totally unrelated. anyway if you are saying malaysian and indonesian are jealous which they are not. first of all, their frigate are being build locally with the help of dcns and damen schelde. next, their frigate is much better armed than the philippine's future frigate. finally the philippine's new frigate which they said as heavily armed is in fact lighter armed compared to the indonesian sigma corvette and malaysian 15 years old lekiu frigate.

    1. Very true. Overall i think this ship is downgrade compare to Incheon other than being more stealthy and better looking. And its not even fully stealth. If you look closely the missle and torpedo is fully exposed which not only slowly deteriorate it but also significantly reduce the ship stealth capability. Filipino must feel really proud and pride of this ship cause its the most advance ship they acquire and the only warship that can has missile. This ship is also the only ship that could probably face Chinese comparable frigate, maybe.
