Australian shipbuilding and engineering group Tenix Defence has started final detailed design work for the seven new ships - one Multi-Role Vessel (MRV), two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and four Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs) - being acquired by the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) under Project Protector.

Tenix was selected as prime contractor in April 2004 and the New Zealand Ministry of Defence awarded it a contract worth around NZ$500 million (US$326 million) on 29 July. Manufacturing is due to start in early 2005 and the new vessels are expected to enter service over the next three years.
