Australian business REDARC Defence & Space has been awarded a $23 million contract to supply 12,600 LED lights for the first batch of three Hunter class warships.

The contract is the culmination of a five-year collaboration between REDARC and UK company MARL International which will see Lonsdale-based REDARC lead the manufacture and delivery of lighting and related parts for the Royal Australian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare frigates.

BAE Systems Australia is working closely with the Commonwealth to build Australian industrial capability by contracting small and medium Australian businesses that are collaborating with the supply chain for the Type 26 frigates, under construction in the UK. The Hunter class frigates to be built at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia are based on BAE Systems’ reference ship Type 26 design.

REDARC Defence & Space is partnering with MARL International to manufacture and supply 79 different types of lights for each frigate, including bunk and flood lights, weatherdeck and step lights, general and emergency lights.

Shipbuilders working on the Hunter program are currently manufacturing five prototype ship blocks to test and refine the processes, systems, tools, facilities and workforce skills ahead of construction of four Hunter ship blocks in May 2023, planned to be used in the first ship.

BAE Systems Australia has already placed contracts with more than 50 Australian businesses to support Hunter’s prototyping phase, and as the program progresses will contract more local companies for equipment and parts manufacture, supply and assembly for the first three frigates.

New Surveillance Weapon Launched

24 November 2022

A new type of unmanned surveillance technology was used on Operation Resolute for the first time.

The seventh rotation of Army’s Regional Force Surveillance Group (RFSG) used Bluebottles, developed by Ocius Technologies, which can provide a 24/7 on-water surveillance capability, with the flexibility to be readily manoeuvred to respond to emerging surveillance requirements or tasks.

During the two-week deployment in October, the contingent conducted surveillance and reconnaissance on and around remote islands off north Western Australia for foreign fishing vessels and evidence of illegal activities.

The contingent of 18 personnel was drawn primarily from Northwest Mobile Force (NORFORCE) and 10th Force Support Battalion, with attachments from the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment and 1st Combat Signal Regiment.

Major Alexander Brent, the Maritime Border Command (MBC) Liaison Officer to Rotation 7, said the use of the Bluebottles, and the embedding of an Ocius employee within the task unit headquarters, added significant capability to the operation.

“In addition to persistent surveillance, we were able to use the Bluebottles to conduct more specific reconnaissance tasks, such as beach landing site reconnaissance and avenues of approach to specific islands in advance of the ground force,” Major Brent said.

“By controlling the Bluebottles remotely, the ground force was free to be able to move independently of the USVs (uncrewed surveillance vessels) and focus on other tasks, such as onshore reconnaissance and patrolling, while still benefiting from what the Bluebottles collected.”

The trial by NORFORCE will likely inform future teaming with unmanned maritime assets to support amphibious and littoral combat manoeuvres.

As one of three Regional Force Surveillance Units which form the 2nd Division’s RFSG, NORFORCE provides a persistent screen in northern Australia, living by the motto ‘Ever Vigilant’.

Several times a year the RFSG screen is supported by enabling assets, including medical teams, remote command-and-control nodes and Australian Border Force (ABF) assets to enhance the effectiveness of the screen as part of Operation Resolute.

NORFORCE Patrol Master, Captain Stephen Sewell, said the efforts increased situational awareness of illegal activities in the region.

“The soldiers conducted surveillance from observation posts, dismounted patrols across the islands and patrols in the littoral environment by watercraft,” CAPT Sewell said.

“Working alongside the Bluebottle uncrewed surveillance vessels, as well as ABF Dash-8 aircraft, the information our contingent gathered will enable potential responses from other government agencies.”

The contingent conducted surveillance and reconnaissance of about 5500 square kilometres.

Major Brent said inter-agency cooperation was vital for the continued success of operations like Resolute.

“There is a very close relationship between the ADF and ABF, facilitated through MBC, which enables shared effort and the sharing of information to achieve better operational outcomes and security for Australia,” Major Brent said.

“At the local level, the Regional Force Surveillance Units have an intimate relationship with the Indigenous communities and leaders in their respective areas of operation, which is vital to the enhanced understanding of country, patterns of life and access across the north of Australia, all of which directly contributes to the land component outcomes for Op Resolute.

“When you add contractors, local councils, local land councils and private industry, who all have vested interests in northern Australia, the level of inter-agency cooperation required to ensure successful Op Resolute outcomes is immense.”

PERTH, AUSTRALIA: Orbital Corporation Ltd (‘Orbital UAV’, ‘the ompany’) has commenced the delivery of engine builds to Insitu Pacific Pty Ltd (‘Insitu Pacific’) – the team responsible for supplying the Australian Army with its next-generation of tactical uncrewed aerial system (UAS).

LAND 129 Phase 3
Insitu Pacific, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, was confirmed by the Australian Government as the preferred supplier to the LAND 129 Phase 3 program in March 2022. The contract includes delivery and initial support of the Integrator UAS as well as associated Ground Systems and Prime Systems Integrator services.

As Insitu Pacific’s primary engine supplier, Orbital UAV’s industry-leading propulsion manufacturing capability was an integral part of the successful bid.

“We are incredibly proud to support Insitu Pacific in the delivery of the Integrator UAS to the Australian Army,” said Todd Alder, CEO and Managing Director of Orbital UAV. “We have been working closely
with the Insitu Pacific team over recent months to ensure the on-time delivery of their propulsion system requirements to support delivery of the Integrator to Army through 2023 and 2024. First engine shipments are a significant milestone in this program of work and our broader relationship with Insitu Pacific,” he said.

A partnership to deliver sovereign capability
The Integrator is a proven, expeditionary UAS in service globally that delivers enduring multi-domain effects to enable a 24/7 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (‘ISR’) capability.

“Our suppliers bring home-grown, Australian innovation and ingenuity to the program,” said Andrew Duggan Managing Director of Insitu Pacific. “The delivery of the Integrator system to the Australian Army will be underpinned by our shared commitment to further develop sovereign capability and supports the growth of businesses directly on our team, as well as their respective ecosystems of Australian suppliers.”

Members of the Queensland-based Insitu Pacific team recently toured Orbital UAV’s Western Australia development and manufacturing facilities to see the Integrator engine production line in operation
and explore the long-term maintenance, repair and overhaul (‘MRO’) requirements associated with the LAND 129 Phase 3 program.

“Sustainment programs represent a critical component of all defence contracts and the delivery of the country’s long-term sovereign capability objectives,” said Mr Alder. “We look forward to implementing a comprehensive MRO agreement that will appropriately support Insitu Pacific and fully address the needs of the end user.”

“After the initial delivery of Integrator, our effective through-life support to Army will include working with our strong, established supplier base such as Orbital to continue to deliver capability and content locally to meet Army’s requirements,” said Mr Duggan.

Orbital UAV Growth Strategy
Orbital UAV is a world leader in the design and manufacture of integrated engine systems for military drones. The Company has a unique product offering that is targeting a $3 billion annual global tactical UAV defence market.

The relationship with Insitu Pacific, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, and the delivery of engines to the Australian Government as part of LAND 129 Phase 3 represents one of many production opportunities being advanced by Orbital UAV. These development and production opportunities include a broad range of established defence prime contractors and potential market disruptors. Orbital UAV’s near-term strategy is to convert engine development contracts into future high-volume production opportunities.

Orbital UAV’s ambition is to expand existing production contracts and convert existing development contracts over the next four years such that the Company captures 20 per cent of the relevant UAV engine market, resulting in significant revenue growth and high profitability.

Orbital UAV maintains its revenue guidance of $20-$25 million for financial year 2023.
