The first of two 106m light frigates for Malaysia, named KAPAL DIRAJA LEKIU, was launched at Yarrow Shipbuilders, Glasgow in December 1994. The second frigate JEBAT is under construction and both are due to be delivered in 1996.
LEKIU has a flight deck for a light helicopter and has a CODAD propulsion system and twin screws capable of giving a speed of 28 knots and range of 5,000nm at 14kts. The vessel is to be armed with missiles, guns and torpedoes for air, surface and submarine warfare.
