The service life of 20 of the Australian Army's 34 S-70A-9 Black Hawk helicopters is being extended by four years to provide continuity of capability to special forces operations, it was disclosed on 2 December.

The Black Hawk fleet was to have been replaced in its entirety by June 2018 with 46 NH Industries NH90 (MRH90 Taipan in Australian service) multirole helicopters, with six of the 34 NH90s delivered to date being allocated to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Now the Sydney-based 6 th Aviation Regiment will continue to operate the S-70A-9 until the end of 2021 in its primary role of special forces support, Major General Andrew Mathewson, head of the Helicopter Systems Division in the Department of Defence's (DoD's) Capability, Acquisition and Sustainment Group, told IHS Jane's.
