Albanese Government continues to strengthen Army's long-range strike capability
The Australian Army has further expanded its fleet of High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, as the Albanese Government continues to strengthen Australia’s long‑range strike capability.

Just one year after taking delivery of its first tranche of HIMARS the Australian has received a second tranche of HIMARS units from the United States, significantly enhancing the capability of Army’s 10th Fires Brigade long-range fires regiment, based in Adelaide. This delivery was achieved two years ahead of schedule.

The milestone follows the Albanese Government’s announcement in April of an additional investment in HIMARS and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) through the establishment of a second long-range fires regiment. This will significantly enhance the ADF’s ability to engage targets at ranges of up to 500kms, transforming to more than 1,000kms with future increments of PrSM.

Today's announcement adds to the Australian Defence Force’s growing long-range strike capability, which at its peak will see up to 90 HIMARS units in service over the coming years across Army's first and second long-range fires regiments within the 10th Fires Brigade.

This capability was demonstrated on Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, where Australia successfully fired a PrSM two years ahead of schedule.

Earlier this year, the first Australian-manufactured Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) missile was also successfully test-fired from an Australian HIMARS, and last year Australia and the United States established a cooperative PrSM program, paving the way for future domestic production.

Through the 2026 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program, the Government is investing up to $37 billion to develop and enhance Defence’s long-range strike capabilities, and up to $36 billion over the decade to accelerate the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Enterprise.

As part of these investments, the Albanese Government is committed to developing a sovereign guided weapon manufacturing industry in Australia, strengthening our sovereign supply chain resilience and creating greater opportunities for Australian industry.

Missile production is already underway for the first time since the early 1970s at a new facility in South Australia, with a second factory set to open next year near Newcastle in New South Wales.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Prime Minister, Richard Marles:
“These highly mobile systems are an incredibly important platform and the delivery of these additional units represents a significant leap in capability for the Australian Army.

“Our investments in Australia’s long-range strike capabilities are about equipping the ADF with the equipment it needs to keep Australians safe.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Defence Industry, Pat Conroy:
“These new deliveries demonstrate our continued commitment to accelerate the acquisition of HIMARS, which are now on track to be fully operational four years ahead of schedule.

“The Albanese Government is investing up to $37 billion over the next decade on targeting and long-range strike capabilities for the Australian Defence Force.

“In addition, the Government is establishing a sovereign guided weapon manufacturing industry, manufacturing Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles here in Australia, with plans to expand this to include the co-production of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM).

“This will provide Australian Army HIMARS regiments access to Australian-manufactured munitions, strengthening our sovereign industrial capability and enhancing supply chain resilience.”

Australian counter-drone technology company, Visionary Machines, and Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA) have entered into a new phase of joint development, assessing counter-drone sensing capability on HDA’s Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) using Visionary Machines’ Pandion™ Sentinel drone detection and tracking technology.

Uncrewed aerial systems have become one of the most persistent threats facing land forces, changing how armies plan, move and fight on the modern battlefield. Global demand for counter-drone capability reflects that shift. For Visionary Machines and HDA, that growth curve represents a significant opportunity to assess sovereign Australian sensing technology integrated to a combat platform with a heritage proven on the international stage.

The joint development activity is focused on exploring how Pandion™ Sentinel autonomous sensing capabilities could support force protection and situational awareness for land combat vehicles operating in increasingly complex environments.

This work builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Visionary Machines, HDA and Hanwha Systems at the Avalon International Airshow in March 2025, which established a framework for identifying and developing opportunities that bring together Australian innovation and leading defence platforms. Through this relationship, the companies have been working together to assess how sovereign technologies can contribute to future defence capability outcomes.

The activity reflects a shared commitment to advancing solutions that address emerging global threats, while supporting the continued growth of Australia’s sovereign defence industry. By combining Visionary Machines’ drone detection expertise with HDA’s Redback IFV, the companies are working to demonstrate the potential for enhanced counter-drone awareness in land combat environments.

The collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to local capability, industry partnership, and the development of advanced technologies within Australia’s defence ecosystem.

Visionary Machines and HDA will be represented at the Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition, running from 6 to 8 October 2026 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“Drones now pose one of the most persistent threats to land forces anywhere in the world and this collaboration with Hanwha Defence Australia is about making sure Australia stays at the forefront of this innovation.”

“For Visionary Machines, it’s a chance to demonstrate how sovereign Australian technology can be matched with a platform already proven on the international stage, and we’re pleased to be continuing that work with HDA.”

Exercise Wallaby 2026 (XWB) in Australia
In September 26, our soldiers from 42 SAR made history by completing the first-ever Hunter Battalion Army Training Evaluation Centre (ATEC) evaluation at Exercise Wallaby 2026 (XWB).

Across the vast terrain of Shoalwater Bay Training Area, our soldiers put the Hunter’s capabilities to the test, integrating digital battle planning, armoured manoeuvre and combined-arms operations in a demanding training environment.

This milestone was made possible by the commitment of every soldier and supporting entity who trained, fought and pushed together. (The Singapore Army)

Exercise Panzer Strike (XPS) in Germany
Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing visited Exercise Panzer Strike (XPS) at the Oberlausitz Military Training Area (OMTA) in Germany yesterday, where he engaged our soldiers and received briefs on the training conducted by the School of Armour.

During his visit, Mr Chan experienced the Hunter Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) first-hand by firing live rounds from the platform. He also observed our Tankees from the Tank Commander Wing (TCW) conducting their Tank Platoon Armour Live Firing System (ALFS) on the Leopard 2SG (L2SG), putting their skills and platoon coordination to the test.

Throughout XPS, cadets from the School of Armour have been undergoing both Hunter and Tank ALFS, sharpening their competencies as future Armoured Infantry and Tank commanders through demanding live-firing training.

This year marks the 17th edition of XPS and 10 years of SAF training at OMTA. At approximately a quarter the size of Singapore, the expansive training area allows our Armour forces to train on a larger scale and execute more complex missions.

Whether Armoured Infantry or Tank, our cadets train with the same purpose — to build the confidence, competence and readiness to lead our Armour forces. (The Singapore Army)

Elbit Systems Mengirimkan Munisi D11A ke Thailand

30 September 2026

The Australian Army will shortly conclude Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter (ARH Tiger) flying operations in Darwin, marking a significant milestone in the transition to the new AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopter capability.

In recognition, the 1st Aviation Regiment will mark the occasion with an open day for members and their families, a formal dinner and a flyover of Darwin.

Commander Army Aviation, Major General David Hafner AM CSC, said the ARH Tiger had provided Army with an armed reconnaissance capability for two decades.

"The end of ARH Tiger flying operations is a significant moment for the 1st Aviation Regiment, but it also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we continue our relocation to Townsville and further build Australia's attack helicopter capability around the AH-64E Apache," Major General Hafner said.

"Our soldiers, aircrew and maintainers have achieved an extraordinary transition from the ARH Tiger to the Apache, while continuing to deliver training and operational outputs.

“Their dedication has ensured Army remains ready for the future."

When introduced into Australian service, the ARH Tiger combined the capabilities of the unarmed Kiowa reconnaissance helicopter and the Bushranger armed version of the Iroquois utility helicopter, into a single platform that integrated intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic warfare and strike effects.

The retirement of the ARH Tiger reflects its planned 20-year service life and Australia’s need to operate in an evolving threat environment, where advanced air defence systems, precision weapons and uncrewed platforms present challenges better suited to the capabilities of next generation battlefield helicopters such as the AH-64E Apache.

The Apache is replacing the ARH Tiger within the 1st Aviation Regiment and will deliver enhanced firepower, networking and interoperability capabilities to support future Army operations.

This successful transition was demonstrated in July 2026, when Australian Army AH-64E Apache crews conducted their first live-fire activities in Townsville.

Six Apaches have been delivered to Australia, with all 29 helicopters expected to be delivered by the end of 2029.

KSAD Akui TNI AD Kerahkan Dua Helikopter Baru untuk Antar Logistik ke Papua

21 September 2026

Helikopter baru Mi-35M TNI AD (photo: Keris Reborn)
