MANILA – The Philippine Navy (PN) on Tuesday held a live-fire unilateral missile exercise west of San Antonio, Zambales, highlighted by the first-ever aerial launch of a Spike Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) missile.

In a statement on Wednesday, the PN said its AW159 "Wildcat" anti-submarine helicopter "successfully conducted the first-ever aerial launch of a Spike NLOS and destroyed its designated target" during the activity.

It said the successful launch proved that "missiles can be launched from both air and surface assets, streamlining flexibility and logistics."

The missile boat BRP Tomas Campo (PG-908) also took part in the exercise, carrying out another coordinated Spike NLOS missile launch against a separate target, the PN added.

Spike NLOS, a precision-guided, multi-purpose missile system developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, is designed to engage targets beyond visual range with pinpoint accuracy using advanced electro-optical and real-time video guidance.

It also empowers operators with full control from launch to impact.

The PN said Spike NLOS missile system's integration into its arsenal "significantly enhances standoff strike capabilities, boosting maritime defense, strategic deterrence, and operational effectiveness."

The successful live-fire unilateral missile exercise forms part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' broader Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC), which emphasizes distributed lethality, domain awareness, and joint force integration across the country’s vast maritime domain.

The drill was witnessed by PN acting flag officer in command, Rear Admiral Alan Javier, Philippine Fleet (PF) commander Rear Adm. Joe Anthony Orbe, and other ranking naval officers in a monitoring room at the Naval Base Heracleo Alano in Cavite City.

Other PN capital assets, including BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), ScanEagle UAV, fast attack interdiction craft missile-capable BRP Albert Majini (PG-909) and BRP Laurence Narag (PG-907), and multi-purpose attack craft BA-492 and BA-488 provided critical support to the exercise, the PN said.

Units from the Philippine Marine Corps’ Coast Defense Regiment and from the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406) also supported the exercise.

Australia, UK Partner on Guided Weapons R&D

25 Agustus 2025

Defence Science and Technology Group’s Sharktooth technology on display at the Australian International Airshow 2025 (photo: DSTG)

The adoption of novel weapons and tactics in today’s battlespace is happening at an extremely rapid rate.

To build competitive advantage, Australia is pursuing greater defence technology cooperation with international partners to accelerate the delivery of advanced military capabilities for the warfighter.

A new partnership between Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and the United Kingdom’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) will bring together cutting-edge technologies from both countries to develop affordable, next-generation guided weapons systems.

Signed in February 2025, the Copperhead Project Arrangement (PA) aims to accelerate weapons development with innovative ‘plug and launch’ modular technology to deliver advanced, yet low-cost, guided weapons subsystems.

Copperhead leverages Australia’s existing Sharktooth technology and combines it with the United Kingdom’s Modular Weapons Testbed – capitalising on both nations’ shared expertise to bring concept to capability faster.

Led by DSTG, Sharktooth is a small guided missile project that enables rapid integration of components like sensors, warheads, guidance systems and propulsion units.

DSTG Research Leader Dr Michael Sharp said ‘plug and play’ modular technology offered the Australian Defence Force an effective and agile response to evolving threats and countermeasure on the battlefield.

“The pinnacle of which could be ‘plug and launch’ enabling the soldier in the field to adapt to the mission at hand by combining weapon components or a mix of weapons,” Dr Sharp said.

“The disruption that this offers over more conventional weapons approaches has the potential to confer asymmetric advantage, contributing to a strategy of deterrence.”

The PA will also grow sovereign manufacturing capability through research and development (R&D), central to the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Plan to deliver the Government’s Future Made in Australia agenda.

'In an increasingly challenging and contested global security environment, Australia must strengthen its industrial and technology cooperation with international partners to pool resources and give Australia a genuine competitive edge.'

Under the GWEO research and development program, the Australian Government has invested nearly $60 million for domestic industry to partner with DSTG on GWEO sub-systems technologies.

Copperhead will boost this effort by driving new Australian defence industry bases in sub-systems where there is currently limited or no capability in Australia.

For example, it will support the creation of future capabilities including rocket motors and propulsion modules, modular warheads and fuzes, advanced seekers and innovative guidance, navigation and control technologies.

“The agreement expands our ability to leverage new technologies from a more diverse range of industry partners and will speed development by integrating technology for test and evaluation in weapons realistic test beds,” Dr Sharp said.

Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro said Copperhead combined the strengths of DSTG and Dstl to deliver asymmetric advantage in a deteriorating strategic environment.

“In an increasingly challenging and contested global security environment, Australia must strengthen its industrial and technology cooperation with international partners to pool resources and give Australia a genuine competitive edge,” Professor Monro said.

“Our ability to deliver advanced defence capabilities is underpinned by international partnerships like this one, enabling game-changing ideas and cutting-edge science to be developed with speed into capabilities that provide the ADF an advantage.”

The groundbreaking partnership illustrates how Defence is prioritising innovation, science and technology (IS&T) to deliver a focused, integrated and more lethal ADF under the 2024 National Defence Strategy and Defence IS&T Strategy: Accelerating Asymmetric Advantage – Delivering More, Together.

NEW DELHI – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippines is in the process of acquiring more BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India, as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) ongoing modernization and strengthening regional defense posture.

“I’ve spoken to the officers and men who operate the BrahMos system and they say we need more,” Marcos told India’s Firstpost in a televised interview aired Wednesday.

“Thank God it has never been used, but from the demonstrations that they’ve seen, from the training they received both in India and the Philippines, from the practice runs that they’ve done, they seem confident with the equipment… We are in the process of actually procuring more,” he added.

The President made the remarks on the third day of his five-day state visit to India, where strengthening defense ties has been a key focus alongside economic and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

The Philippines received its first batch of BrahMos missiles from India in April 2024 under a USD375 million deal signed in 2022, a deal covering three batteries, training for operators and maintainers, and logistics support.

Marcos emphasized that while military capability upgrades are underway, the Philippines is not preparing for war.

“We are not girding up for war,” he said.

“We are simply reacting to the challenges that we are facing... the tensions have increased in the past years and so this is just the reaction to that. We have to do it. This is our duty—to defend the country.”

The President also noted that upgrading equipment like BrahMos is essential to achieving technical interoperability with defense partners such as India, amid increasing joint training and maritime cooperation.

“When I left Manila a couple of days ago, four Indian vessels were actually in the South China Sea. One of them was a research vessel docked in the Philippines, and three were conducting exercises with the Philippine Navy,” he said.

Marcos’ remarks came amid renewed maritime tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where Chinese vessels have repeatedly violated Philippine sovereign rights, including by ramming, harassing, and blocking Filipino vessels near Ayungin Shoal.

The President also praised India’s fast-growing defense industry, calling its technology “second to none” and confirming that other potential acquisitions beyond BrahMos are under review.

“Everything is on the table right now,” he said, noting that India’s defense technology remains a key option as the Philippines evaluates its future procurement schedule.

Rudal-Rudal Baru Turkiye pada IDEF 2025: GOKBORA, GOKHAN serta AKATA

03 Agustus 2025

Rudal BVRAAM Gökbora buatan Roketsan dengan penggerak ramjet berbahan bakar padat solid-state (photo: EDR Magz)

Rudal BVRAAM Gökbora buatan Roketsan dengan penggerak ramjet berbahan bakar padat solid-state (image: Roketsan)
