Airbus Helicopters Discussing H145M/C-17 Combo with Undisclosed Prospective Customer, Likely Australia

31 Juli 2018

Airbus Helicopters is discussing with a potential customer a requirement to airlift some of the company’s H145M battlefield support helicopters aboard a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft for rapid forward deployment.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a live-fire demonstration of its H145M HForce helicopter and weapons system in Hungary on 27 July, a senior programme official said the requirement is for four helicopters to be flown to an area aboard a C-17, before being made ready for operations in less than 30 minutes.

While the head of H145M marketing, Christian Fachini, declined to identify the prospective customer, Australia is known to have such a requirement for its special operations forces (SOF). Indeed, Australia is one of a number of countries that is currently being demonstrated the H145M HForce at the Bakony Combat Training Center (BCTC) in Hungary.

Australia’s requirement for a SOF helicopter came to light in the country’s Defence Integrated Investment Programme (DIIP), which was published in 2016. As noted in the DIIP, the new fleet of deployable light reconnaissance and attack helicopters to provide air-mobility support for SOF missions is due to be fielded from about 2025. As previously reported by Jane’s , the helicopters will be able to be deployed rapidly by a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-17 as a small force element of three-to-four aircraft and personnel. The programme timeframe was listed as 2025–28, with a budget range of AUD2–3 billion (USD1.5–2.3 billion). Besides Airbus Helicopters and its H145M, Jane’s has previously been told Bell is offering its UH-1Y Venom and NorthStar Aviation is offering its 407 MultiRole Helicopter (MRH) as potential SOF solutions.

In terms of potentially selling the H145M to Australia, Airbus Helicopters hopes to build on sales already secured with Germany (15), Hungary (20), Luxembourg (2), Serbia (9), and Thailand (5).

NLAW for The Malaysian Army

31 Juli 2018

NLAW (Next generation Light Anti-tank Weapon) is the latest shoulder-launched anti-tank missile system (photo : SAAB)

SHAH ALAM: It appears that the Army had ordered a batch of Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapon (NLAW) developed by Sweden and United Kingdom. This was revealed as the Defence Ministry issued a request for tender to multi-modal transport operator (MTO) to ship the missiles back to Malaysia.

Like the earlier order for the LAW and MAPAM (Mortar Anti-Personnel Anti-Material) this was the first time MD had heard about the acquisition of the anti-tank missiles.

Saab announced an order for the NLAW from an undisclosed customer back in December, 2016 with deliveries scheduled for 2017. Checks with MD sources indicated that the undisclosed customer may well have been Malaysia.

As the NLAW is manufactured by Thales Air Defence in the UK, it is likely that this could also be part of the Starstreak deal in 2015. Under the deal Thales agreed to buy back the retired Starburst missiles and launchers. Part of the proceeds of the buy back led to the purchase of the Guardians MRAP for the Malaysian contingent in Lebanon.

It is also likely that a small batch of the NLAW and LAW will also make their way to the leading elements of the 10th Para Brigade as a last ditch defence against all sorts of targets.

MOSCOW/TASS/. Russia may supply Project 22800 corvettes codenamed Karakurt, armed with the Kaliber missiles, to Vietnam, China, India and other countries of the Asia-Pacific Region, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov told reporters on Monday.

"These ships are very successful: they have a big tonnage, good armament, and Kaliber is the most important thing. The corvette has an acceptable price, it is small, compact and fast. I believe that it has a good export potential for a number of countries, especially from the Asia-Pacific Region - Vietnam, China, India and others," Borisov said.

Currently, the units of Russia’s Navy, namely the Baltic, the Northern, the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian flotilla are equipped with the Karakurt-class corvettes, he said. "Now the construction of the first three vessels of this class has been launched at the Eastern shipyard. I think the new models’ production will heighten interest in them."

The Project 22800 corvettes (Karakurt) are a series of Russian multirole artillery missile vessels of the near maritime zone developed by the Almaz Central Maritime Design Bureau. The Russian Navy is due to receive a total of 18 small-sized Project 22800 ships, including the first two in 2018. The vessels are armed with high-precision missiles, modern artillery systems and Russian-made power plants.

House Resolution 1379, a resolution urging President Rodrigo Duterte to allot a budget equivalent to 2% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to effectively increase the country’s defense spending at par with ASEAN neighbors, is currently pending at the House of Representatives.

The resolution was proposed by Magdalo Part-list Representative Gary Alejano in October 2017.

“Mandato ng Sandatahang Lakas ang protektahan ang tao at ang estado. Tungo dito, inihain ng representanteng ito ang HR 1379 noong Oktubre 2017, na layuning itaas ang budget para sa defense spending ng bansa,” ALejano said.

“Kasalukuyan itong inaaral ng Committee on National Defense and Security ng House of Representatives,” he added.

“[D]espite the enactment of Republic Act No. 7898 in 1995 or the “AFP Modernization Act”, and the passage of Republic Act No. 10349 or the “Revised AFP Modernization Act” in 2012, the procurement of crucial defense materials were insignificant and, sadly, the Armed Forces of the Philippines still remains among the least capable militaries in the region,” says in the proposed resolution.

China Donates Four Patrol Boats to PH Navy

30 Juli 2018

four patrol boats donated from China (photo : The rhk111)

The Chinese government has donated four patrol boats to the Philippine Navy as Manila seeks closer ties with Beijing despite a sea dispute.

“The Philippine Navy thru the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) General Headquarters has accepted the donation from the PRC (People’s Republic of China) four patrol boats,” Navy spokesperson Cdr. Jonathan Zata said Sunday.

The donation came with 30 units of rocket propelled grenade launcher (40 mm) with corresponding ammunition.

Zata said they are assessing how the new boats can be integrated into the organization and supported in the long term in terms of logistics.

“We have assigned personnel to train on its operation and maintenance,” he said.

Other details of the patrol boats were not immediately available.

In late 2016, China has offered military assistance of $14 million worth of small arms and fast boats to the Philippines for free.

Photos of the blue patrol boats being transported along Roxas Boulevard in Manila circulated on social media last Friday.

China had also previously donated thousands of rifles and ammunition to the Philippine police and military as it battled Islamic State-linked terrorists in Marawi City.

President Rodrigo Duterte chose to seek warmer ties with China after a sour territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea during the previous administration. He pursued an independent foreign policy and sought closer ties with China as it distanced itself from the US.

Despite the friendly relationship between the two countries, China continues to assert “indisputable sovereignty” over the South China Sea with its nine-dash line claim. It was invalidated by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague in 2016 but China has refused to acknowledge the ruling.

The Philippine government has also played down the ruling in exchange of economic investments and friendly ties with China.

In line with the installation of Type 630 30 mm close-in weapon system (CIWS) turrets, the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) has also equipped two of its KCR-60M fast attack craft with Chinese-made sensors, consoles, and combat information systems.

Details of the systems, which were revealed on 22 July by a TNI-AL source at the service’s headquarters in Cilangkap, have been corroborated with Indonesian industry sources in Surabaya who are familiar with the matter.

Three KCR 60M class (photo : defence.pk)

Jane’s first reported in January 2018 that the TNI-AL had removed missile launchers and installed the Type 630 CIWS on its lead KCR-60M vessel, KRI Sampari (628), as part of wider plans to reconstitute the class. The CIWS turret is now situated at stern, where a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) used to be positioned. Since then, sister vessel KRI Tombak (629) has been modified in a similar manner.

The Type 630 CIWS is a variant of the Russian-developed AK-630 that has been marketed by China Shipbuilding Trading Company (CSTC) as the “NG-18 30 mm six-barrelled naval gun”. The weapon can engage low-altitude aircraft at distances of up to 2,500 m, sea-skimming projectiles at up to 1,300 m, and can fire between 4,500 and 5,000 rds/min.

It has now been confirmed that the Type 630 CIWS set-up on both Sampari and Tombak include the Type 347G ‘Rice Bowl’ short-range fire-control radar and its associated fire-control console. This sensor has been installed in the aft section of the ships’ superstructure, and can track targets at up to 6 n miles away.

Menhan Tengok Pesanan Tank Boat di Banyuwangi

28 Juli 2018

Tank boat Antasena (all photos : detik)

Thai Navy will Receive the Strongest Frigate in ASEAN

28 Juli 2018

HTMS Tachin 471 FFG (all photos : thaidefense-news)

The pictures from South Korea showed Thailand's DW-3000F first frigates completed the tests and will hit the road to the country in August.

South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) recently announced that its first DW-3000F guided missile frigates were built for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) under a contract of 416 USD Tachin and number 471 have completed the examination and evaluation.

The ship will be transported to Thailand in August and will join the RTN fleet in January 2019, when it will be the largest and most powerful ship in Southeast Asia, crossing the Formidable class of Singapore.

As planned, Thailand will receive technology transfer from Korea to build the second DW-3000F in the country itself. It is known that the battleship developed from the prototype Gwanggaeto (KDX-1) destroyer.

The DW-3000F has a length of 123 m; width of 14.4 m; draft of 8 m; The 3,700 tonnes full load displacement is the largest ship ever exported from Korea.

The Tachin is equipped with state-of-the-art CODLAG dynamics, a combination of diesel-electric and gas-turbine engines, for a top speed of 30 knots, a range of 4,000 km in cruise speed 18 knots.

The main sensors of the Tachin are the Sea Giraffe 4A long-range radar with a reconnaissance range of over 350 km; It comes with the Sea Giraffe AMB mid range radar (180 km long range).

There are also three navigation radars on board; sonar system in drag and tether; 1 surveillance camera (including thermal imaging and TV); 2 decoy launchers.

Weapon equipment of the Tachin consists of a 76.2 mm Oto Melara Super Rapid gun; Two Phalanx close-in weapon systems; Two DS-30M Mark-2 30 mm automatic small calibre gun; Two 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine guns.

Most noticeable on board is the Mk 41 vertical launcher with eight launch tubes that can carry 32 RIM-162 ESSM mid-range air defense missiles, or eight RIM-66/67 SM-2MR/ERs, in addition. It also launched the RUM-139 VL ASROC anti-submarine.

Among the ships were the RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship cruise missile launcher and the Mk 44 light anti-submarine torpedo.

By acquiring the DW-3000F, purchasing three Chinese AIP submarines and launching a domestic mini-submarine project, it is expected that in the near future the Royal Thai Navy will regain its position as the regional superpower that once held in the past.

JAKARTA –Direktorat Perhubungan Angkatan Darat (Dithubad) bersama PT Hariff DTE berhasil menciptakan teknologi komunikasi Battlefield Management System (BMS) CY-16H.

PHL’s C-130T Aircraft Now Capable of Maritime Patrol

28 Juli 2018

PAF C-130T tail number 5040 (photo : Diego Roxas)

The United States government committed, under the Obama administration through Maritime Security Initiative (MSI), to provided the Philippines with palletized intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) kit for Philippine Air Force (PAF)’s C-130 aircraft.

The implementation of this commitment by US was raised through a photo that appeared first in Philippine Plane Spotters Group (PPSG) social networking group this week.

The implementation was further confirmed by MaxDefense Philippines in an article.

PAF’s C-130T aircraft with tail number 5040 was utilized for the project. The said aircraft is one of the two C130Ts provided by US government through Excess Defense Articles (EDA) Program.

“The US military made use of the Canadian-built SABIR (Special Airborne Mission Installation and Response) system, that allows the mounting of modular pods externally without the need for modifications on the airframe except for the rear paratrooper doors,” MaxDefense said.

“Several systems were installed to convert the aircraft into a dual use surveillance/maritime patrol – heavy tactical transport platform,” it added. More information about ISR equipment used for the C130 aircraft is available at https://maxdefense.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-philippine-air-force-finally-got.html

US government’s Maritime Security Initiative also facilitated the delivery of several naval assets to Philippine Navy like the third Del Pilar class frigate BRP Andrés Bonifacio (FF-17) and research vessel BRP Gregorio Velasquez (AGR 702).

HMAS Brisbane Second Air Warfare Destroyer Delivered

27 Juli 2018

HMAS Brisbane (photo : RAN)

In a moving ceremony, Navy’s second Air Warfare Destroyer, Brisbane, has officially been handed over to Defence.

Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, attended the acceptance ceremony at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide.

Minister Pyne said Brisbane is the second of three ships being delivered by the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance which comprises the Department of Defence, Raytheon Australia, and ASC Shipbuilding supported by Navantia Australia.

“Today’s milestone is a further demonstration of the success of the Turnbull Government’s Naval Shipbuilding Plan,” said Minister Pyne.

“The AWD Program has met all budget and schedule targets since the implementation of the Government’s reform initiative.”

“Brisbane will enter into service later this year and with her sister-ships, they will be the most potent warships ever operated by the Royal Australia Navy.”‎

“By using a combination of Australian and globally proven technologies, these highly capable warships will contribute directly to our maritime security and allow us to work even closer with our allies.”

Over the past decade more than 5,000 skilled Australians have worked on the three Air Warfare Destroyers.

“This has laid the foundation for an Australian shipbuilding and systems integration industry which will construct the new Hunter class frigates in South Australia.”‎

“The AWD Program has also built a vast Australian supply chain, comprising more than 2,700 suppliers.”

“Over 500 of these are from South Australia, stimulating strong economic growth and job creation.”

The first Air Warfare Destroyer, HMAS Hobart, was accepted and commissioned into service last year.

The third ship, Sydney, was launched at Osborne in May this year and will be delivered to the Navy next year.

Thai shipbuilder Marsun Company Limited has launched another five M21-class patrol boats for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN).

The vessels, which bear pennant numbers from 270 through to 274 respectively, were launched on 24 July at Marsun’s facilities in the country’s Samut Prakan province, said the RTN in an announcement the following day.

The service is now anticipating the delivery of 10 M21 patrol vessels. An earlier batch of five boats in the class was launched by Marsun in February 2018.

The M21 class has an overall length of 21.4 m, an overall beam of 5.56 m, and a hull draught of 1.05 m. It is powered by two MAN diesel engines driving two fixed pitch propellers, and can attain top speeds of more than 30 kt and a range of more than 350 n miles (648 km) at economical speed.

The vessel has carrying capacity for up to 4,000 litres of fuel, 1,200 litres of water, and can accommodate a crew of nine. It can operate up to Sea State 2.

Images of the launch ceremony released by the RTN confirm that each of the five vessels launched on 24 July have been equipped with a 20 mm cannon in the primary position. The class is also armed with one 12.7 mm machine gun with a co-axial 81 mm grenade launcher in the aft section.

The M21 class has also been equipped with one crane-launched rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) at stern, and one inflatable life raft canister on the port side at aft.

Once delivered, all five vessels are expected to be deployed with the RTN’s coastguard squadron and take on duties such as VIP escorts, fishery resources protection, and other maritime constabulary duties in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Integration of Zu-23-2 anti-aircraft artillery on amphibious vehicles Crawler PTS-M of the Vietnamese Navy made its has the ability to defend itself against enemy aircraft while landing.

PTS-M is a medium-sized special-use caterpillar built by the Soviet Union and aided by the Vietnam People's Army. It is designed to carry people, motorcycles, guns, ammunition and cargo. less than 10 tons over water obstacles such as rivers, streams and large lakes.

Under certain conditions, the PTS-M has the ability to swim relatively well, so it is also available for a number of naval engineering units or island defense units.

PTS-M's transport capacity is up to 70 soldiers equipped with individualized firearms, or up to 12 ambulances (mounted on the vehicle while in military service, rescue, rescue). PTS-M consists of two men: commander and driver.

PTS-M can carry a maximum load of 5 tons when engaged in military operations or 10 tons when operating on water surface at a distance of less than 3 km. The floating capacity of the PTS-M is very large, up to 60% when carrying 10 tons, the maximum speed on the asphalt is 40 km / h or 11 km / h when swimming.

Equipped with a powerful 350 horsepower diesel engine, PTS-M's transcendental capabilities are good, maneuverable on a variety of terrain, bridge, the traction of the car on the two propellers reached 1.950 kg.

The crawler works when the water speed is 2.5 m / s, exceeds the sea level to 4, with winds up to 18 m / s, crossing the 2.5 m wide, across straight obstacles. Stand height of 0.65 m, the corner up and down the largest berth when carrying a maximum load of 10 degrees.

Standard equipment on the PTS-M includes infrared lights for night vision in low light conditions, marine compasses for swimming, communications equipment, radio gauges, breakers. In addition, the pump is installed for use in case of water.

It can be seen with such equipment, the PTS-M proved very weak if the enemy attacked by helicopter or low-flying aircraft, then the vehicle becomes a "shot gun".

To tackle this situation, Vietnam has taken a creative step that is mounted on a PTS-M crawler frame, 23 mm anti-aircraft gun Zu-23-2, which makes it easy to hit. Return the enemy plane while moving from sea to shore.

Compared to many other armies, only integrated PTS-M 7.62 mm PKM or 12.7 mm NSV machine guns to defend themselves against enemy infantry, it is easy to see that the Vietnamese way of doing things is unique, bring outstanding strength to the means of carrying this crawler.
