Russia and China recently conducted a large-scale joint maritime exercise, which could be upgraded to joint air and sea patrols in the future, analysts say.

The warships of the two countries recently passed through the Tsugaru Strait and Japan's Izu island chain, a move that is considered a show of strength before the US and its allies.

“The Chinese and Russian militaries can conduct joint air and sea patrols in the Sea of Japan or the Western Pacific,” said Yue Gang, a retired PLA officer and now a peace activist. military commentary. Mr. Gang said that the two sides can jointly mobilize more modern weapons into the exercises.

“With the mobilization of more modern weapons, the two countries will show more clearly their determination to strengthen coordination as well as demonstrate that they are not hiding anything from each other. Both sides need to strengthen their joint capacity to handle crises or emergencies," Gang said.

“China and Russia are showing off their joint patrol capabilities. The two sides have conducted joint air patrols, and the latest is joint patrols at sea. They are trying to show their determination to jointly maintain regional stability,” said former Chinese military lecturer Song Zhongping.

During the last exercise, the Russian and Chinese fleets performed anti-submarine exercises and passed through the narrow Tsugaru Strait between the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido. The group then headed south and passed the chain of Izu islands while helicopters also took off from the deck.

According to the announcement of the militaries of the two countries, five Russian warships and five Chinese warships participated in this exercise. This is also the first time China has sent the 055-class Nanchang missile destroyer to participate.

Other ships dispatched by China include a 052D destroyer, two 054A frigates and an corvette. Russia sent the Udaloy-class destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, the submarine hunter Admiral Tributs, an electronic surveillance ship and two other destroyers.

China and Russia have periodically cooperated in military exercises since 2012. Since 2019, the two countries have conducted annual joint air patrols in the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan.

Observers believe that Russia and China will increase exercises in the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan in the near future, where both countries have interests. The exercises will likely focus on air defense and anti-ship capabilities.

"The joint deployment of warships by Russia and China is a strong warning to the US and Japan," said former Chinese military lecturer Song Zhongping.

Both Mr. Gang and Song said that the Chinese and Russian militaries are drawing closer together because they are facing increasing external pressure, including the formation of the AUKUS security alliance of the US, UK and US trio. Australia, along with the expanded role of the "Quad" with members including Japan, India, the US and Australia.

“These things pose a relatively serious threat to China, even Russia. Beijing and Moscow urgently need to strengthen mutual trust on the military front, step up joint exercises and strategic cooperation," Song said.

During the joint Russian-Lao military exercise LAROS-2021, held in the Primorsky Region at the Sergeevsky training ground, the tankers of the Eastern Military District (ВВО/VVO) shared with their Lao counterparts their experience of modern manoeuvrable combat using unmanned aircraft.

In particular, live firing was carried out, during which Lao tankers were trained to destroy the enemy with the help of a reconnaissance fire complex.

Control firing was carried out in the form of an offensive training battle. Each tank platoon gradually hit targets imitating heavy armoured vehicles, anti-tank crews and grenade launchers. After completing the firing, the tankers set up a smokescreen and made a covert evasion from a retaliatory strike.

During the training offensive operations, aerial reconnaissance of targets and fire adjustment were organised using the Eleron-3SV unmanned aerial vehicle. The leadership of the Lao side was also shown the methodology for organising training in firepower and other basic subjects of combat training.

The joint Russian-Laotian exercise LAROS-2021 was held for the first time on the territory of Russia. The first joint exercise was held in 2019 in Laos.

The Russian side was represented by tank subunits of the combined arms army of the Air Defence Forces stationed in the Primorsky Territory.

Servicemen practised joint actions to combat illegal armed groups. In total, about 500 military personnel took part in the exercise, about 100 units of military equipment were involved, including Su-25 attack aircraft and Ka-52 air defence attack helicopters. The exercise started on August 11 and lasted until the 19th.

Russia Teases ‘The Checkmate' Fighter Ahead of MAKS Airshow

Russia has teased the existence of a new fighter aircraft, dubbed ‘The Checkmate', ahead of the MAKS Moscow Airshow set to run from 20 to 25 July.

Rostec State Corporation posted a teaser video of the new aircraft on 13 July, containing, the organisation said, “allusions to the key features and unique properties of the project” that has been developed by United Aircraft Corporation (although not officially announced, it has been reported by Russian media that Sukhoi is the design house).

While the video itself gave little away as to the configuration or capabilities of the aircraft, it alluded to a target export market that includes Argentina, India, Vietnam, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In line with this new aircraft being aimed more towards the export market, the video is in English rather than Russian.

Of greater significance than the promotional teaser video has been the emergence of unofficial photos of either the aircraft or a full-scale replica at the Zhukovsky show site on the outskirts of Moscow. Although the aircraft is covered with a tarpaulin intended to disguise its outer mould line, from these photos and previously disclosed imagery it is possible to determine the aircraft's overall dimensions, as well as some of its key design features and possible roles.

Russia Developing Single-engine Fighter Jet

12 Desember 2020

Rostec develops advanced single-engine light and medium-class piloted and unmanned aircraft (image : Russkievesti)

Russian tech firm working on concept of advanced single-engine combat plane

MOSCOW/TASS/. Russia’s state hi-tech corporation Rostec is working on a concept of an advanced single-engine light- and medium-class piloted and unmanned combat plane, Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov said on Monday.

"Indeed, work is underway to develop a combat aviation system of the future in its light and medium classes. Under the design, this may be a universal platform in the manned and unmanned versions. The company is working on the concept and the operational requirements for such a platform. We are doing this on our own initiative so far, without [federal] budget funds," the Rostec chief said, responding to a question about the plans to create a light single-engine fifth-generation fighter for Russia’s Aerospace Force.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has not placed any orders for this work so far. However, Rostec believes in the expediency of developing the new fighter, possibly, in cooperation with foreign partners, Chemezov pointed out. The Rostec chief said "this is an interesting theme from the viewpoint of promoting such a plane for exports."

Given that such a fighter is developed and manufactured using Rostec’s funds, the company will be able to deliver it for exports on its own, Chemezov said. "Especially, if this is a joint development with some state. However, the Defense Ministry may purchase it for its own needs as well. Naturally, the plane will have to be upgraded to the level required by the Defense Ministry for its interior, if a decision is made," Chemezov said.

Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov announced in 2017 that Russia was planning to develop a fifth-generation light fighter in cooperation with other countries. As Head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Yuri Slyusar specified at the time, Russia would be represented in the project by the UAC as the parent organization and also by the Sukhoi Company that has developments on the fifth-generation fighter and the MiG Aircraft Corporation that has developments on single-engine planes.

UEC-Klimov Company Executive Director Alexander Vatagin earlier specified that Russia had the potential to restart the production of inexpensive single-engine fighter jets whose motor could be developed on the basis of the available RD-33 engine.

Russia’s Air Force Command made a decision in the early 1990s to give up the production of single-engine combat planes. At that time, the Russian Air Force operated MiG-23, MiG-27 and Su-17M aircraft of various modifications.

Russian APS could Defeated both Spike and Javelin

05 Desember 2020

Arena-E APS mounted on a T-80U MBT (photo : KBM)

According to Mr. Bekkhan Ozdoev, only with the active defense system (APS) Arena-M, Russian tanks can block anti-tank missiles from attacking from all directions.

Mr. Bekkhan Ozdoev is currently the industrial director of the Federation of State Corporations Rostec said that Arena-M was developed with practical experience in the battlefield, so the ability to deal with anti-tank missiles is highly appreciated. Currently, Javelin and Spike are completely within their capabilities.

"The Arena-M complex is built on the basis of state-of-the-art elements, and its technical-tactical properties have significantly increased. The complex is able to block ammunition coming in from any direction.

Its ability is so high that it can intercept all types of advanced anti-tank guided missiles, including the infamous Javelin and Spike when attacking from above.

Arena-M active protection system (photo : topgun)

In our opinion, not only is the agreement of Russian experts but also foreign experts are shared, without active protection, the operational problem cannot be solved.

Active protection systems will be used not only to protect armored vehicle tanks but also other vehicles," said Mr. Bekkhan Ozdoev.

In terms of design, a complete Arena-M system consisting of a sensor station was located near the end of the turret. Inside the sensor station is equipped with a multi-function Doppler pulse radar, which has a 360-degree scanning range around the vehicle.

An interceptor system consisting of 26 bullets was arranged around the turret, providing an interception from 220-270 degrees forward and on the sides of the tank. Arena-M is equipped with a digitally controlled computer. The system operates as follows:

T-80 Arena KAZT Active Protection System (image : wiki)

The sensing system will scan the area around the tank to detect threats from anti-tank weapons. When an anti-tank missile is launched towards the tank, the target parameters will be transmitted to the computer control system.

Based on the missile's coordinates and speed, the control computer will activate the interceptor system in a suitable position. Arena-M will launch a rectangular ammo detonated about 1.5 meters from the tank, when exploded, it will release thousands of small shrapnel to destroy the missile or warhead of other anti-tank weapons.

The Arena-M system has a target response time of only 0.07 seconds, and it can deal with targets up to 700m/s. The APS system is also capable of identifying drones and small caliber armor-piercing bullets that are not capable of threatening tanks.

The Arena-M system provides a protection range of approximately 50 meters around the tank. Previous Kubinka field tests showed that the Arena system successfully defended the tank against attack with controlled anti-tank missiles and dynamic armor-piercing bullets using a fixed beam.

T-72 MBT with Arena M (photo : top war)

Main battle tanks equipped with Arena will be 3 times more likely to survive on the battlefield than tanks equipped with other APS systems. If Arena-M combined with the soft defense system Shtora, the protection would greatly increase.

The Arena-M system is being tested on the T-80UM1 main battle tank and according to some sources, this APS system is also being used on Russian armored vehicles operating in Syria and it has been shown. proves his strength and reliability.

In addition, Arena-M was also introduced with a variant of the upgraded BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle. Export variant Arena-E comes with the main battle tank T-72B3. APS Arena-M is expected to bring a new strength to Russia's main battle tank as well as other tanks and armored vehicles.

In addition, it was possible to achieve an increase in command control; the updated machine has a software and hardware complex for operation as part of an automated tactical control system. Combat power is enhanced by a new digital fire control system. There are no analogues of Sprut-SDM1 in the world, and therefore it has a high export potential, ”said Vladimir Artyakov, First Deputy General Director of Rostec State Corporation.

Light amphibious tank "Sprut-SDM1" is a combat armored tracked amphibious vehicle with an artillery and missile system of weapons of 125 mm caliber, which can, without refueling, make marches at a distance of 500 km, transported by landing ships and military transport aircraft, parachute landing and parachute way together with the crew on board.

The vehicle is capable of conducting combat operations in high mountains and hot tropical climates against highly armored vehicles, fortified strongholds and enemy manpower, without preparation to overcome water obstacles in waves of up to 3 points while firing afloat. If necessary, the tank can be equipped with snow and swamp tracks, which further expands the possibilities of its use.

“In terms of firepower, the Sprut-SDM1 is not inferior to the T-80, T-90 tanks, and in terms of mobility on land and water it is at the level of the BMD-4M. These and other qualities, combined with the circular rotation of the turret and stabilization of weapons in two planes, make it possible to use the Sprut-SDM1 as a light amphibious tank, "said Alexander Denisov, General Director of the High Precision Complexes NPO.

The machine was designed and developed by PJSC Kurganmashzavod, which is part of the High-Precision Complexes holding of the State Corporation Rostec.
