Personnel from Philippine Air Force (PAF) Technical Working Group (TWG) for the Attack Helicopter Acquisition Project under Horizon 2 of Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program visited Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) to check on the TAI/Leonardo T129 ATAK several weeks ago, MaxDefense Philippines said.
According to MaxDefense, this is a possible sign that PAF is open to changing the technical specification and requirements for the Attack Helicopter Acquisition Project from acquiring 24 units of armed light utility helicopters like Airbus H145M or Leonardo AW109, to acquiring lesser units of dedicated attack helicopters like the T129 ATAK or similar helicopters in the market.
Budget allocation for PAF (photo : Maxdefense)
PAF’s Attack Helicopter Acquisition Project under H2 RAFPMP is allocated with 13.8 billion pesos.
PAF is currently operating 8 AW109E helicopters armed with rocket-machine gun pods acquired under Horizon 1 of RAFPMP worth P3.4 billion.
MaxDefense also said that it “was informed last month by our defense sources that during the Senior Leader’s Meeting in June 2018, the Attack Helicopter acquisition was among the projects that will be prioritized this year.”

AIM-120 AMRAAM berdaya jangkau 45-160 km dan berkecepatan maksimal 4 Mach. Sedangkan R-37M disebut-sebut memiliki jangkauan hingga 398 km (cruise glide) atau 150 km (direct shot) dan kecepatan 6 Mach.
Meski begitu, AS bukan berarti berdiam diri.

PH Air Force Now Integrating Defense Capabilities

MANILA -- The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is now taking the first steps in integrating efforts to regain its air defense capabilities.
This was emphasized by Air Force head Lt. Gen. Galileo Gerard Kintanar as the air service celebrated its 71st founding anniversary Tuesday.
"Currently, our stress is on integrating efforts in regaining air defense capabilities for peace and resilient development, our anniversary theme for this (year)," he added.
Kintanar, however, admitted that integration is a challenge due to the cost of developing a robust joint command, control, communications, computer and information (C4I) system but said Air Force has taken the initial steps with acquisition of 12 South Korean-made Mach 1.5 capable FA-50 light-lift fighter trainers and coming activation of their brand-new air defense surveillance radars.
The above-mentioned platforms are part of the ongoing Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program.
"But this is only our path ahead with our FA-50(PH) aircraft in harness and with our air defense surveillance radars scheduled to go up in time, best practice dictates that our decision loops must be based on common operating features and shared situational awareness. In this time and age no Air Force can afford to fly in the haze of uncertainty or fog of conflict," the PAF chief added.
In line with this, Kintanar said the PAF is now coordinating with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to integrate their air defense radars with those of the CAAP to enable us to effectively monitor and detect unregistered aircraft and other unidentified entrants.
"More importantly we need to engage more stakeholders as we develop a national strategy for aviation security with DOTr and CAAP as our main partners," he added.

The first of the Collins class submarines has returned to service after a boost to capability was implemented by one of Defence’s key industry partners.
ASC – formerly the Australian Submarine Corporation - conducted planned maintenance onboard the Collins class in Osborne, South Australia as part of a full-cycle docking and enterprise restructure of submarine maintenance. For her crew, reassuming material control (MATCON) and responsibility for the platform represented an important milestone in her return to service.
HMAS Collins’ Marine Engineering Officer, Lieutenant James Ferrari said it was a significant undertaking.
“A Collins class submarine is an extremely complex platform made up of a multitude of interconnected and interdependent systems.
“After a long period in dock, the task of ensuring that all of those systems function not only individually but also in concert presents significant challenges.
“My team has worked closely with ASC to ensure command is fully informed as to the state of the boat in advance of the transfer of MATCON and that we were well positioned to step in and take over responsibility for the boat as soon as the transfer occurred,” Lieutenant Ferrari said.
The transfer of MATCON between the RAN and ASC during different stages of the lifecycle of Collins class submarines is a key feature of the longstanding and successful partnership between Defence and industry partners.
Leading Seaman Marine Technician Submariner David Costello said working with ASC contractors was a positive experience.
“There are a lot of processes in place to ensure that work on the boat is carried out correctly but what it really comes down to is that the ship’s company have to be confident that contractors working on the boat take her technical integrity as seriously as we do.
“It’s been a great experience to work alongside the ASC contractors and see their level of professionalism firsthand,” Leading Seaman Costello said.
Commanding Officer HMAS Collins, Commander Christopher Ellis was thankful to both ASC and his crew.
“Bringing a boat back into service after a prolonged maintenance period presents a myriad of challenges, which the crew have met with admirable enthusiasm and professionalism,” he said.
“This important milestone of accepting the platform back into the Navy could not have been accomplished without ASC’s hard work and dedication to provide quality workmanship.
“As a result of commendable cooperation between my ship’s company, the larger submarine community, and ASC contractors, I am confident we are on track to return to sea this year with a safe and very capable platform,” Commander Ellis said.
Having now taken MATCON, the crew will oversee the final stages of her maintenance period to include harbour acceptance trials, while working towards readying her, and themselves to go to sea later this year.

Indonesia Withdraws BO-105 Helos from UN Task Force after Concerns Raised Over Capabilities
05 Juli 2018
Indonesia will no longer deploy the BO-105 helicopter for subsequent UNIFIL duties in Lebanon. Country will dispatch aircraft from its search-and-rescue agency as an interim measure for next deployment (photo : Jane's)
The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) will cease subsequent deployments of its BO-105 utility helicopters in the Middle East after concerns were raised over the aircraft’s ability to undertake further United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) operations.
The matter has been confirmed by various sources within the TNI-AL, each of whom have cited various technical issues with regards to the BO-105’s capabilities.
These include the aircraft’s general inability to produce a “recognised maritime picture” (RMP) that can be shared with other participating assets in the UNIFIL patrols, and issues attaining endurance, and load parameters required for the multinational patrols.
Indonesia has been taking part in the Maritime Task Force (MTF) UNIFIL patrols, which seeks to prevent unauthorised entry of arms or related materials by sea into Lebanon, since 2009.
As part of its involvement, the TNI-AL has rotationally deployed either a Diponegoro (Sigma)-class, or a Bung Tomo-class corvette to conduct anti-proliferation patrols in the Mediterranean Sea.
For each of these past and current deployments, a BO-105 helicopter has been embarked on the vessels. The aircraft are deployed to augment the host corvette’s maritime surveillance capabilities, and hail merchant vessels that would otherwise not be within range the warship.
The TNI-AL operates a fleet of six BO-105 airframes, the first of which was delivered in 1980. The aircraft are based with the 400 Skadron Udara (Air Squadron) in Juanda, Surabaya.
