Testing NZDF Combat Capability at RIMPAC

26 Juli 2016

The live firing test took place  during RIMPAC 2016 with torpedoes from RNZAF's P-3K2 Orions (photos : NZDF)

Ships and aircraft of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) have joined forces to hunt down an “enemy” submarine and attack it with torpedoes.

The live firing test took place this week off Hawaii during RIMPAC 2016 – the world’s biggest international maritime exercise.

The Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Kaha, her Seasprite helicopter and two P-3K2 Orions from the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s (RNZAF) No 5 Squadron each fired a torpedo at the target, a remote underwater vehicle playing the part of a submarine.

Anti-submarine warfare is a key part of the NZDF’s maritime combat capability and the exercise provided an intense test of the combined skills of the ship, helicopter and the two Orions.

Orion pilot Flight Lieutenant Jonathan Pound said: “Sonar buoys have to be laid in a particular pattern to hunt a submarine. For us, this involved precision flying from 2000 feet to as low as 200 feet above the sea.

“It also included steep turns – a 60 degree angle of bank – which meant the Orion was essentially on its side and the crew was experiencing 2G, twice the force of gravity.”

The Commanding Officer of No 5 Squadron, Wing Commander (WGCDR) Daniel Hunt, said the torpedo drop was the first by an RNZAF aircraft in over five years.

“The range here in Hawaii has the ability to provide almost instantaneous feedback to the crew about how accurate the drop was. This allows us to externally validate our processes and procedures and ensure we have an effective combat capability.

“In New Zealand we do not have a range with this sort of fidelity and the cost of owning one would be prohibitive, which is why attendance at RIMPAC is such a major event for the team.”

He said the technology involved was crucial to the exercise.

“It provides valuable opportunities for us to train and learn with our multi-national partners.

“It was a real team effort from loading the torpedoes to locating, tracking and attacking the target below the surface. It’s a great demonstration of our warfare capability.” (NZDF)

Weapons Away!

Following on from the bombing camp earlier in the month, our Force Elements at

A total of four torpedoes were dropped, two from the P-3 (above), one from the Seasprite, and one launched from TE KAHA.

The Mk46 torpedo is the RNZAF's primary Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) weapon. The joint task force tracked the "submarine" (simulated by a remote underwater vehicle), a task that required the full attention and coordination of the entire crew, before launching their attacks. (RNZAF)

ST Kinetics Showcases Expanded Terrex IFV Family with an Eye on International Requirements

Singapore Technologies (ST) Kinetics, the land systems division of state-affiliated defence prime ST Engineering, is seeking to expand its global 8x8 armoured vehicle footprint with the Terrex family of infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), which now includes three distinct platforms with gross vehicle weight (GVW) ratings ranging from 24-35 tonnes.

Senior ST Kinetics executives asserted during a closed press briefing on 22 July - which also commemorated an occasion where all three current members of the Terrex family were displayed together for the first time - that the company's sustained efforts in capability development will enable it to meet the growing spectrum of operational requirements from international customers.

Winston Toh, ST Kinetics executive vice-president and chief marketing officer, told IHS Jane's in a separate interview that the company's 8x8 vehicles have also garnered interest from countries in the Middle East as well as North and South America, in addition to the Australian Army Project Land 400 Phase 2 and US Marine Corps (USMC) Amphibious Combat Vehicle Phase 1 Increment 1 (ACV 1.1) programmes that it is currently pursuing with overseas industry partners.

"We have adopted different business models to cater to the customers' needs," Toh explained. "For example, we are the vehicle OEM but we are providing [our partners with] design and engineering capabilities to support in-country manufacturing … which helps manage cost and risk for the customer."

Toh admitted that while Terrex has yet to make inroads in the Asia Pacific region outside of Singapore, ST Kinetics has leveraged on its experience with Terrex to provide technical advice and consultancy services to Thailand's Defence Technical Institute's (DTI's) indigenous 24-tonne 8x8 Black Widow Spider armoured vehicle development for the Royal Thai Army (RTA).

MANILA (PNA) - The PAF Bids and Awards Committee has allocated the sum of PHP13,463,196.31 for the acquisition of spare parts needed for the maintenance of the avionic systems of its South Korean-made FA-50PH "Fighting Eagle" light-interim jet aircraft.

Pre-bid conference is scheduled on Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. at the PAF Procurement Center Conference Room, Villamor Air Base, Pasay City.

While submission and opening of bids is on Aug. 9, 9:00 a.m. at the same venue.

"The pre-bidding conference shall be open to all interested parties who have purchased the bidding documents," PAF BAC chair Brig. Gen. Nicolas Parilla said in a bid bulletin posted at the Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System.

The PAF's first two FA-50PH jet aircraft arrived in the Philippines in Nov. 28, 2015. The rest remaining 10 aircraft, out of a 12-plane order from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) worth PHP18.9 billion, will be delivered between 2016 to 2017.

The FA-50PHs has a top speed of Mach 1.5 or one and a half times the speed of sound and is capable of being fitted air-to-air missiles, including the AIM-9 "Sidewinder" air-to-air and heat-seeking missiles aside from light automatic cannons.

It will act as the country's interim fighter until the Philippines get enough experience of operating fast jet assets and money to fund the acquisition of more capable fighter aircraft.

KAI's FA-50PH design is largely derived from the F-16 "Fighting Falcon", and they have many similarities: use of a single engine, speed, size, cost, and the range of weapons.

KAI's previous engineering experience in license-producing the KF-16 was a starting point for the development of the FA-50PH.

The aircraft can carry two pilots in tandem seating. The high-mounted canopy developed by Hankuk Fiber is applied with stretched acrylic, providing the pilots with good visibility, and has been tested to offer the canopy with ballistic protection against four-pound objects impacting at 400 knots.

The altitude limit is 14,600 meters (48,000 feet), and airframe is designed to last 8,000 hours of service.

There are seven internal fuel tanks with capacity of 2,655 liters (701 US gallons), five in the fuselage and two in the wings.

An additional 1,710 liters (452 US gallons) of fuel can be carried in the three external fuel tanks.

Trainer variants have a paint scheme of white and red, and aerobatic variants white, black, and yellow.

The FA-50PH uses a single General Electric F404-102 turbofan engine license-produced by Samsung Techwin, upgraded with a full authority digital engine control system jointly developed by General Electric and KAI.

The engine consists of three-staged fans, seven axial stage arrangement, and an afterburner.

Its engine produces a maximum of 78.7 kN (17,700 lbf) of thrust with afterburner.

LAPAN Uji Roda Pendaratan Prototipe Pesawat N219

26 Juli 2016

Pesawat N-219 (photo : BUMN)

Uji Coba Embarkasi Berhasil

KRI Teluk Bintuni diklaim mampu mengangkut 7-10 unit MBT Leopard.

President Rodrigo Duterte told the troops of Philippine Army 6th Infantry ‘Kampilan’ Division, July 22, that he wants to sell or scrap the presidential yacht BRP Ang Pangulo. He said proceeds will go to the improvement of Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center also known as the V. Luna General Hospital.

Another plan is to build a new hospital. “I can build you a new hospital or improve. Kung sino ang magbili ng barko, anyone of you here can be a broker. Ipagbili yan kasi may komisyon kayo diyan,” he told the troops.

“Or entirely scrap na yan whatever makuha ko, I will build, I will repair V. Luna. Lagyan ko lahat, CT scan, MRI,” the President said.

Another possible fate of the BRP Ang Pangulo is it will be turned into a hospital ship. Kumpletuhin ko lang,” he said.

The President said plan for BRP Ang Pangulo will be “in the fullness of God’s time.”
