As a partner of the Indonesian Navy for over 40 years, Thales is the appointed supplier of combat systems for the country's warships in service. Earlier this year, Thales also successfully modernised one of Indonesia's Diponegoro-class corvettes by installing and integrating the sonar system with the Kingklip hull-mounted sonar.
The upgrade follows a repair of the corvette damaged in an accident that took place during a routine sea operation in January 2015. By updating the operator console, signal processing and hardware technology, Thales enabled the Indonesian navy to achieve a boost in sonar performance for its warship as well as enhanced communicative capabilities between the user and the machine through the human machine interface (HMI), which is already installed on the Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR) class frigate.
Furthering its commitment to establish long-term relationships with local industrial partners and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and expertise, Thales worked closely with PT Dharma Satya Nusantara (DSN) on the reparation of the sonar system.

In February 2018, Thales also completed a successful sea trial with the support of a former French navy sonar operator, who also shared best practices with the Indonesian navy officers.
“We are proud to be part of the Indonesian navy's modernisation ambitions as we support them in the refurbishment of the sonar system on its warship. This is telling of the trust they have in Thales based on the longstanding partnership we have with the Indonesian authorities to always deliver and share our expertise to support them in their goals, whatever it takes,” said Eric-Jan Raatgerink, Country Director, Thales in Indonesia.
Thales is supporting our customers' growth ambitions in the Republic of Indonesia for close to 40 years in the areas of defence, aerospace, and space. With its main office located in Jakarta, Thales is providing various solutions for air traffic management and telecommunication satellites to its civil customers, while being a long-term provider of defence solutions to the Indonesian Air Force, Army and Navy.

Earth observation satellites, capacity building, integrated geo-information platform to support the Kingdom of Thailand’s key development priorities (photo : Airbus)
Paris - The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency of Thailand (GISTDA) has selected Airbus as partner for its next-generation national geo-information system. The end-to-end system will make Thailand one of the few nations able to fully exploit geo-information for societal benefits. Fully in line with Thailand’s 4.0 policy, the THEOS-2 programme will constitute a major milestone in the development of Space in the Eastern Economic Corridor and its Digital Park.
As part of the contract, a comprehensive capacity building programme will involve Thai engineers in the development of an integrated geo-information system, ground segment and two Earth observation satellites: a very high-resolution and a small satellite system. The small satellite system from Airbus’ subsidiary SSTL will be assembled and tested in-country by Thai engineers to deliver technology transfer and involve local suppliers. This will be complemented by an extensive training scheme capitalizing on Airbus’ comprehensive geo-intelligence expertise, and will further develop Thailand’s geo-spatial industry.
“We are very pleased to be working with Airbus to jointly develop an innovative end-to-end geo-information platform that will become a national centre of excellence,” said Dr. Anond Snidvongs, Executive Director of GISTDA. “The platform will host and exploit multi-source data in an interoperable and integrated manner. The resulting insights will be key sources of information for Thai leaders and will help them deliver Actionable Intelligence Policy (AIP): tools for area-based management and decision-making.”
Dr. Anond Snidvongs added: “Many users will access the system, from policy-makers to local users. Ultimately, THEOS-2 will be leveraged to develop Thailand national skills in the whole Space value chain.”
“Being selected by GISTDA for the THEOS-2 programme, Airbus is continuing the successful relationship developed with THEOS-1, and we are of course very honoured by GISTDA’s continued confidence in us,” said Nicolas Chamussy, Head of Space Systems at Airbus. “With our unrivalled expertise across the entire Earth observation value chain, we are in an excellent position to support an ambitious and determined organisation like GISTDA to establish an all-encompassing geo-information system for the benefit of the Kingdom of Thailand.”
From the early stages of the programme, GISTDA will feed its geo-information system with satellite imagery collected by the Airbus constellation of optical and radar Earth observation satellites Pléiades, SPOT, TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X, as well as other sources of data.
An optical satellite system delivering 0.5 m ground resolution imagery, THEOS-2 is based on Airbus’ innovative, flight-proven AstroBus-S satellite. Scheduled to be launched in 2020, it will secure the service continuity of THEOS-1, an Airbus-built satellite launched in 2008, which continues to deliver high quality imagery four years after its expected end of life. With the AstroBus-S satellite, Thailand is joining a small circle of nations with sovereign access to very high-resolution geostrategic information.

More than 1600 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel have arrived in the United States ahead of a month of focused military training activities with 26 nations from across the globe for Exercise Rim-of-the-Pacific (RIMPAC) 2018.
The ADF has deployed HMA Ships Adelaide, Success, Toowoomba and Melbourne which have been part of the Indo Pacific Endeavour 2018 task group, one submarine, diving personnel, an amphibious landing force from the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, and one P-8A Poseidon aircraft to RIMPAC.
Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, said the exercise will provide valuable training with Australia’s partners and allies and a unique opportunity to test capabilities.
“RIMPAC is the world's largest maritime exercise and is a great opportunity for us to strengthen international partnerships, enhance interoperability and improve our readiness for a wide range of potential operations,” Minister Payne said.
“This year’s theme is “Capable, Adaptive Partners” and ADF personnel will exercise across a range of scenarios from humanitarian assistance and disaster response to maritime security operations and complex war fighting.”
Now in its 26th iteration, about 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, more than 200 aircraft and more than 25,000 personnel will participate in the US-led exercise in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California from 27 June to 2 August.
Chief of Joint Operations, Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, said that, along with Talisman Sabre, RIMPAC is the pinnacle of high end military exercises in the region.
“From amphibious warfighting exercises with our flagship HMAS Adelaide to the first ever Harpoon missile fired from an Australian P-8A Poseidon aircraft, RIMPAC is a real test of Australia’s maritime military capability,” Air Marshal Hupfeld said.
“It provides complex and challenging training in a multinational environment, perfect for strengthening interoperability with our regional partners and allies.”
Other activities will include gunnery, missile, anti-submarine, and air-defence exercises, as well as maritime interdiction and vessel boarding, explosive ordnance disposal, diving and salvage operations, mine clearance operations and an amphibious landing.

NC-212i aircraft of the PAF (photo : PTV)
On June 26, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) formally accepted and blessed two new Indonesian-made light-lift fixed-wing NC-212i aircraft during a ceremony held at Haribon Hangar, Clark Air Base, Pampanga.
These two aircraft will be operating under PAF’s 220th Airlift Wing.
These aircraft were acquired under the First Horizon of Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program. The Philippine government contracted Indonesian Aerospace to build two NC-212i aircraft in January 2014.
“The NC212i aircraft can be used strategically for producing artificial rain, maritime patrol and coast guard patrol. It can also be utilized for the following missions: passenger and troop transport, cargo/logistic transport, anti-smuggling control, immigration control, search and rescue, paratroop dropping, and medical evacuation,” PAF said.
“Compared to the previous NC212, the new model has a carrying capacity of 28 passengers, a digital avionic and next generation autopilot. It features a ramp access, next generation navigation and communication system, as well as, cheaper operational cost. Moreover, the said aircraft is capable of taking-off and landing on unpaved runway,” PAF added.
PAF also noted that though it has been using the previous generation aircraft which is the C212, this is the “first Indonesian aircraft ordered by the Philippines and is the latest generation of the NC212.”
