Training to Master the "Steel Warriors"

05 Agustus 2021

QDND - We went to the training range of the 206th Armored Brigade (Military Zone 4) one day at the end of July. At the beginning of the morning, the sun in the western part of Nghe was already blazing, the heat rising up. However, on the training ground, members of the crew were still enthusiastically training in general shooting of obstacles day and night in mountainous terrain. After the succinct command: "Get into the battle vehicle", the crews quickly returned to their positions with skillful and precise movements. The tanks are like mighty "steel warriors" crossing the hills, spillways, ravines...

The impressive image when the tank is maneuvered reminds me of the times when officers and soldiers of the unit participated in the exercises in the provincial defense area of Military Region 4. Those were real combat situations. tanks lead infantry assaults with live ammunition. In the dark conditions, the area is wide, the road is difficult to maneuver, but the actions of the crews are very rhythmic, on each nose, each direction of fire is almost absolutely accurate.

As the man who always stood by the army in many drills, Colonel Le Huu Thanh, commander of the 206th Armored Tank Brigade Brigade, proudly said: “The peculiarity of the tank detachment is to fight in the conditions of the war. The battle is complicated, fierce, fast, the field of vision, the space in the cockpit is tight, but the tank must maneuver quickly, coordinate and coordinate closely with the forces. Therefore, we are well trained in maneuvers and combat plans in all terrain and weather conditions. Due to good training, the brigade's tank fire efficiency in recent drills has always been excellent."

According to Mr. Thanh, the element of coordination and synergies in training and combat is very important. Thanks to that, even when situations arise, such as: The vehicle is bogged down, the chain is broken while leading the infantry to attack and destroy the target; The cannon on the vehicle was jammed... the detachments still actively managed to overcome it. The brigade determined that, in each combat crew, each person was not only good at their own expertise but also had to master the work of others in order to work together; Detachment commanders are not only good at tank combat techniques and tactics, but also have to understand and grasp the technical principles and tactics of fighting infantry and other troops and troops. Therefore, before the drills, the brigade always strengthens supplementary training to synthesize the contents of army synergies for officers and soldiers, ensuring that the unit successfully completes all assigned tasks.

Research, I also know, at the Sports Festival "Good Tank Crew" of the entire army armored force in 2021 just held, the brigade has excellently won the first prize of the whole group. To get that result, the unit has increased training to shoot at long distances, to shoot at night, to train in the use of night vision equipment, in conditions of stopping the vehicle, to conduct firing; practice basic and segmented driving lessons on complex, realistic winding terrain, with a length of 4 to 5km, in conditions of limited driver visibility. Captain Tran Ngoc Hien, the tank crew leader who has just won the first prize at the sports festival, stated his experience: "In order to train well the technical and tactical contents, we pay special attention to training the soldiers with flexible health, thereby mastering the equipment and guns on the vehicle, meeting the requirements of the combined shooting test".

With achievements in training, competitions, and sports festivals, in recent years, the 206th Armored Brigade has always been one of the leading units in the Emulation Movement of the Armed Forces of Military Region 4. The unit has been awarded the flag of a good training unit by the Ministry of Defense for many years; The Armored Corps presented the flag of the Unit that successfully completed the training mission and was ready to fight in the 2016-2020 period.

Next-generation vehicles show their firepower

The two contender vehicles for Australia’s soon-to-be-selected infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) (LAND 400 Phase 3 project) recently conducted a firepower demonstration at Puckapunyal Military Area, showcasing next-level protection, firepower and mobility.

Rheinmetall Defence Australia’s KF-41 Lynx and Hanwha Defense Australia’s Redback have been facing off in extensive user-evaluation field trials.

Both companies have delivered three prototype vehicles, which are being tested over the course of this year as part of a two-year risk mitigation activity. A decision on the preferred tenderer will be presented to government for consideration in 2022.

Land 400 Trials Platoon Commander Major Joel Sloane said the vehicles were being tested and evaluated in all weather and in varying terrain to ensure they were fit-for-purpose.

“Our trials have involved literally blowing the vehicles up in order to test how they can withstand a range of firepower and threats,” Major Sloane said.

“We have been testing the Redback and Lynx through a range of tactical scenarios in the field that will be realistic to how they will be employed in the future.”

At the firepower demonstration, both vehicles fired their 30mm main weapon cannon, and co-axial and remote weapon station 7.62mm MAG 58 machine guns, engaging targets at ranges from 300m to more than 2000m.

Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group Head Armoured Vehicle Division Major General David Coghlan said with its next generation protection suite, 30mm cannon, anti-tank guided missiles, and the ability to engage helicopters and drones, either vehicle offered capabilities never before seen in Army.

“These vehicles will provide increased firepower, mobility and, most importantly, protection for our infantry soldiers,” he said.

“We are rapidly approaching the end of the risk-mitigation activity and submission of the short-listed tenderers’ final offers. We will then undertake a final evaluation to identify the preferred tenderer.

“The live-fire shoot showcases the extensive testing and evaluation process we are undertaking to provide confidence that these new vehicles are fit-for-service.”

Each vehicle has a crew of three and can carry six fully armed infantry soldiers into battle. The vehicles are designed to fight alongside the nation’s current and future tank fleet, with commensurate mobility.

Major Sloane said Army had been using the current M113 armoured personnel carriers (APC) since the mid 1960s.

“The APCs have served Army extremely well for many decades. But to be here at the start for what is going to be a vehicle that supports us for multiple generations is something that I am proud to be part of,” he said.

“The best thing about the infantry fighting vehicle is it will allow the infantry corps to contribute more to joint land combat.

“The capabilities and systems on this new vehicle allows the infantry to fight with the vehicle, not just from the vehicle. It allows us to move further in the battle space, under armour, with full situational awareness.”

Individual vehicle craft, tactical manoeuvres, advances and attacks on objectives are just some of the activities the project is putting these vehicles to the test in.

Both companies, should they be successful, have committed to building the majority of vehicles in Australia, with substantial investment in Australian industry capability, supporting Australian jobs, talent and technology.

Valued at between $18.1 billion and $27.1 billion, the Land 400 Phase 3 project is the largest acquisition project in Army’s history.

First Time Replenishment at Sea (RAS) for HMAS Brisbane

Replenishment at sea supplies a first for Brisbane

HMAS Brisbane and United States Navy Military Sealift Command replenishment oiler USNS Rappahannock conducted two replenishments at sea (RAS) within a week during Exercise Talisman Sabre 21 (TS21).

This was the first time the Australian Hobart-class destroyer had conducted the critical logistics task since she commissioned into service in 2018.

Brisbane’s navigator Lieutenant Marita Knack said the serial’s success was a testament to the ability of the crews of the ships to operate as a single unit in exchanging fuel at sea.

“Brisbane conducted RAS approaches as well as seamanship training in order to set up the conduct of the replenishment with USNS Rappahannock,” Lieutenant Knack said.

“It was quite exciting for the crew to actually put this training into practice and conduct Brisbane’s first-ever international RAS during TS21.”

A RAS is a whole-of-ship activity that can take up to two-and-a-half hours.

It involves personnel from across the ship’s company – from medics and chefs to combat systems operators, electronics and marine technicians, and boatswains – who are required to work seamlessly as a team for the duration of the RAS.

Able Seaman Jacob Hodge was among those participating in the RAS and said it was a memorable experience.

“A RAS is generally between a supplying and receiving ship to deliver fuel, ammunition and general stores at sea rather than having to go alongside,” Able Seaman Hodge said.

“It was a fantastic experience to conduct the first international RAS-L [fuel]) aboard Brisbane since her commissioning, and continue to grow and develop our partnership between the two nations.”

Brisbane’s unofficial band played on the upper decks during both RAS evolutions with the aim of boosting morale between the Australian and American crews.

TS21 is the biggest bilateral training activity between the two nations.
