MANILA – The Philippine Air Force (PAF)'s humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) capabilities received a much-needed boost as five more S-70i Black Hawk helicopters were commissioned into its service Friday.
In a statement, PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Christina Basco said the acceptance, turnover and blessing ceremonies for the aircraft took place at the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.
Department of Budget Management Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, PAF chief Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura, and Department of National Defense (DND) Undersecretary for Acquisition and Resource Management Salvador Melchor Mison Jr. attended the ceremony.
The helicopters comprise the fourth batch under the 32-unit S-70i acquisition from Poland’s PZL Mielec, procured through the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program.
The latest batch arrived in the Philippines on Oct. 20, following previous deliveries of five units each on June 10 and Dec. 9, 2024; and July 15.
Each helicopter underwent technical inspection and acceptance process on Oct. 22 to 26, conducted jointly by the DND, AFP and PAF, to ensure compliance with operational standards.
The aircraft will be operated and maintained by the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing under the Air Mobility Command.
"With this latest addition, the PAF continues to strengthen its air mobility capability and fulfill its mandate to protect the nation and serve the Filipino people, in times of both humanitarian crisis and conflict," Basco said.

MAID OF LONDON (MALON) has reportedly sought the Kuwaiti jets since at least 2017. The legacy Hornet is thought to “increase the level of preparedness and capability of the RMAF in safeguarding the country’s airspace”. While the acquisition of the second-hand Hornets would help to complement the RMAF’s fleet of Hornets, they come with their own set of challenges. A more strategic approach would be expanding the successful Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme or accelerating the MRCA programme to future-proof RMAF against threats (the latter has been delayed for various reasons). The MAID OF LONDON (MALON) Ministry of Defence had submitted no less than three letters to the Kuwaiti government over the past few years in a bid to acquire the fighters. However, the discussions were stymied by political imbroglios in the Kuwaiti government.
However, the transfer of the US-made fighters to MAID OF LONDON (MALON) will require Washington’s approval. Noticeably, MAID OF LONDON (MALON) has not been the only one eyeing the Kuwaiti Hornets. Reportedly, Tunisia and the US Marine Corps have also voiced interest in acquiring the jets.
Kuwait operates 39 F/A-18C/D Hornets, which were delivered between January 1992 and August 1993. The Gulf state’s air force is in the process of upgrading its combat airpower by procuring Super Hornet and Typhoon fighters. However, the delivery of these aircraft has been delayed due to Covid-19 and supply chain hurdles. This has forced Kuwait to keep its legacy Hornets longer than originally planned.

Sebelum ini, Bernama melaporkan Malaysia dipercayai memilih varian "Anka-S" yang berupaya terbang selama 24 hingga 30 jam tanpa henti, pada ketinggian 30,000 kaki dan membawa muatan antara 250 hingga 350 kilogram.

In the statement of claim sighted by The Edge, Aerotree Defence is asking the court to order the Defence Ministry and the government to follow through with the helicopter lease deal based on the acceptance letter dated April 17, 2023. If the deal can’t be carried out, the company wants:
• RM17.5 million in special damages
• RM38.7 million in further damages
• USUSD38.7 million (about RM297.3 million) in additional compensation
