PT Len Industri kini tengah melakukan pengembangan combat data link system untuk mendukung misi intai strategis Skadron Udara 5. Pengembangan sistem tersebut akan memberikan layanan jaringan nasional, sehingga dapat mengirimkan data secara real time ke operator yang ada di darat.

“Seperti yang dijelaskan oleh Kadispenau, jadi kita ada national network, kita juga punya combat data link system yang sedang dikembangkan oleh PT LEN. Sehingga data-data maupun foto-foto yang kami dapat selama pelaksanaan operasi itu bisa kami transfer ke darat secara real time,” terang Komandan Skadron Udara 5, Letkol Pnb Akal Juang, kepada Angkasa, Rabu (29/3/2017) lalu.

Dengan adanya sistem tersebut, data-data yang di dapat saat melakukan operasi pengintaian dan pengamatan dapat diolah dan dianalisa oleh pihak berwenang yang ada di darat untuk kemudian  diambil tindakan, dalam hal ini TNI Angkatan Laut melalui Koarmatim ataupun Koarmabar. Semantara wilayah yang menjadi cakupan operasi Skadron Udara 5 yakni meliputi Alur Laut Kepulauan Indonesia (ALKI) I, ALKI II, ALKI III dan wilayah pulau Ambalat.

Indonesia memiliki wilayah laut yang begitu luas, sehingga cukup memakan waktu bagi TNI AL untuk melakukan patroli. Untuk itu, Skadron Udara 5 pun memikul tugas operasi untuk membantu patroli wilayah maritim Indonesia yang begitu luas untuk membantu dan mendukung pelaksanaan tugas pengintaian dan pengamatan yang dilakukan TNI AL.

“Kalau kami hanya melaporkan pengamatan di alur laut tersebut, kalau ada hal-hal mencurigakan, kapal-kapal mencurigakan, kami berkoordinasi dengan Armatim ataupun Armabar, sesuai dengan alur laut mana yang kami laksanakan operasi. Mereka akan menentukan tindakannya menggunakan kapal-kapal yang mereka miliki. Kami hanya bisa deteksi kapal-kapal yang tidak teridentifikasi saja,” jelas sang komandan.

Berdasarkan penuturannya, di selat Malaka, penemuan target kapal-kapal yang belum teridentifikasi relatif lebih banyak ketimbang daerah lainnya. “Kalau jumlahnya memang relatif lebih banyak di ALKI II maupun ALKI III. Itu kapal-kapal yang kadang tidak teregister ditempat kami, tapi kami konfirmasi ke darat,” papar Akal.



Ketika dari rekan-rekan memverifikasi hal tersebut, lanjut Akal, Skadron Udara 5 kemudian menyerahkan kepada TNI AL untuk tahap penindakannya. “Kami hanya menyampaikan data-data yang ada secara pengamatan kami dari udara,” tegasnya.

Di wilayah selat Malaka banyak ditemukan target-target kapal belum teridentifikasi oleh Skadron Udara 5 dikarenakan wilayahnya rata-rata dekat dengan darat. Hal tersebut membuat sinyal dari kapal-kapal itu lebih mudah terdeteksi.

DND Looking for More Platforms to Boost External Defense Capabilities

MANILA (PNA) -- With the deliveries of the South Korean-made FA-50PH "Fighting Eagle" jet fighters nearing completion and more modern equipment coming in line, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the Philippines is now looking for more platforms that will further boosts its external defense capabilities.

"As we are now in the Second Horizon of our Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program, we are looking into the acquisition of more equipment for our external defense missions," he added.

While Lorenzana did not give specifics on what kind of equipment the DND is looking to acquire, he said it is possible that these include missile-armed frigates, anti-submarine helicopters, and multi-role fighters, long-range patrol aircraft, to name a few.

Last March 29, two more FA-50 jet fighters were delivered in Clark Air Base, Angeles City, Pampanga, increasing the number of Mach 1.5 jet aircraft in the Air Force inventory to eight.

Another four are expected to be delivered within the year, completing the country's 12-plane order from Korea Aerospace Industries worth PHP18.9 billion.

The AFP Modernization Program is divided into three horizons, with the first lasting from 2013 to 2017, the second from 2018 to 2022 and third 2023 to 2028.

The Second Horizon calls for the acquisition of equipment more attuned to external defense missions and has a programmed funding of around PHP100 billion.

Australia Looks At Fibre Laser Technology for Aircraft Protection

New Generation Fibre Laser Technology for Aircraft Protection

The Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group continues to research advanced Directed Infra-Red Counter-Measure (DIRCM) concepts to protect aircraft from increasingly sophisticated infrared guided missiles.

Heat seeking missiles and electro-optic sensors remain a threat to defence platforms, especially to ‘stealth’ platforms that are only stealthy in certain portions of the radio frequency spectrum.

Currently deployed DIRCM systems use bulk crystalline solid-state lasers to produce the laser radiation required to defeat thermal heat seeker sensors on missile threats. Such lasers are sensitive to vibration and as a result are difficult to engineer and expensive to ruggedize for integration onto a defence platform. Despite these challenges, DST has successfully developed and transitioned several generations of this laser technology to industry.

The Laser Technology Group at DST has continued its research in the development of lasers for DIRCM applications. The DST-proposed new generation fibre laser technology replaces a large fraction of the solid-state laser with a monolithic fibre laser amplifier. Fibre lasers are far less sensitive to vibration and, as a result, are cheaper and easier to manufacture.

“DST’s new generation fibre laser technology will significantly improve the stability of the laser in harsh conditions and reduce the manufacturing costs,” says Defence Laser Scientist Nikita Simakov.

“The technology also offers performance advantages: operating at higher average powers than bulk crystalline lasers, and with higher peak powers and better beam quality than diode lasers.”

“In addition, fibre-based systems are less sensitive to vibration and mechanical deformations offering superior performance and cost savings when integrated on Defence platforms.”

DST is seeking industry partners interested in licencing and commercialising the technology.

Camar Emas TNI Angkatan Udara Kini Didukung MX-20HD EO/IR

Skadron Udara 5 satu-satunya satuan di tubuh TNI Angkatan Udara yang memiliki tugas untuk melaksanakan operasi pengintaian dan pengamatan udara, baik di udara, laut (maritim), maupun di darat. Saat ini, beberapa armada di Skadron ini sedang melakukan modifikasi dari perangkat lama yang memiliki kemampuan SLAMMR (Side Loocking Airborne Modular Multimission Radar), dan sekarang sedang tingkatkan dengan disematkan kamera resolusi tinggi WESCAM MX-20HD Electro Optical and Infrared (EO/IR).

“Sekarang dalam proses instalasi dan sedang ditinjau oleh para pejabat Mabesau. Kemudian kami juga punya Searching Radar Target yang sedang di-install,” terang Letkol Pnb Akal Juang, Komandan Skadron Udara 5, Rabu (29/3/2017) lalu.

Kamera MX-20HD merupakan sensor digital elektro-optik dengan high-definition. Kamera ini, mampu untuk melakukan tugas inteligen, pengawasan dan pengintaian yang dilakukan oleh pesawat patroli maritim dengan jarak ketinggian yang cukup jauh (hingga 35.000 kaki). Kamera ini juga mampu untuk melakukan misi pengawasan yang dilakukan secara terus-menerus.

Dengan dilakukannya modifikasi tersebut, pesawat Boeing 737-200 ‘Camar Emas’ yang dimiliki oleh Skadron Udara 5 akan mampu memiliki spesifikasi yang diharapkan untuk melaksanakan tugas pengintaian maupun pengamatan maritim.

Saat ini, Skadron Intai Strategis yang bermarkas di Lanud Sultan Hasanuddin, Makassar, memiliki kekuatan sebanyak lima pesawat, terdiri dari empat pesawat Boeing 737-200 dan satu pesawat CN235 MPA. Khusus pesawat Boeing 737 dilengkapi mesin console dan kamera yang mampu mengambil gambar maupun data dari ketinggian sampai dengan 35.000 feet.

Dengan modernisasi peralatan yang mereka lakukan, Camar Emas kini mampu mengirimkan data target, baik gambar maupun data-data yang lain secara real time ke darat.

“Kami punya empat pesawat Boeing, yang mempunyai kemampuan intai secara full ada tiga pesawat. Sekarang akan dimodifikasi tiga pesawat. Sekarang baru proses satu pesawat (nomor ekor 7303), nanti bertahap akan menyusul 7301 dan 7302,” jelas sang komandan.

Untuk tugas pengamatan dan pengintaian, Skadron 5 tiap tahun rutin melaksanakan tugas tersebut. Wilayah yang menjadi target operasi mereka mulai dari sekitar wilayah pulau Ambalat hingga ALKI (Alur Laut Kepulauan Indonesia) I, hingga ALKI III.

“Jadi kami di benteng Ambalat, di sekitar pulau Ambalat kami melaksanakan pengamatan secara rutin. Kemudian di ALKI I, ALKI II, ALKI III, semua alur laut kepulauan kami melaksanakan operasi sepanjang tahun,” paparnya.

Myanmar MiG-29 Upgrade Revealed: Will Malaysia Follow?

Ten MiG-29 fighters belonging to the Myanmar air force have been upgraded at RAC MiG facilities near Moscow, a source in the Russian delegation at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2017 show in Malaysia last week told AIN. Moscow is now offering similar upgrades to Malaysia, which acquired 18 in 1994, and to Bangladesh, which procured 10 MiG-29s at the turn of the century.

The upgrade solution for Myanmar is referred to as MiG-29SM (mod.). It is believed to be a low-cost version compared to the more expensive MiG-29UPG that India has been doing, and which is broadly similar to the Russian air force MiG-29SMT. Details about the MiG-29SM (mod.) are yet to emerge, but it apparently keeps the original N-019E radar, albeit with some technology insertions and part replacements.

Among other things, a cross-fleet upgrade would bring the Myanmar aircraft to a single standard. In 2001 that country signed for 10 MiG-29 single-seat fighters and two MiG-29UB operational trainers. In December 2009, Myanmar awarded RAC MiG a follow-on order for 10 more MiG-29s (“Fulcrum-B”) plus six more advanced MiG-29SEs and four operational trainers. Shipments under the second order took place in late 2011-early 2012, with the last pair of two-seaters arriving in March 2013. This brought the Myanmar Fulcrum fleet to 32 aircraft. RAC MiG’s offer was to upgrade the whole fleet of single-seaters to a common standard.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) ordered 16 MiG-29N and two MiG-29UB-N aircraft in 1994 and received them in 1995-1996. The “N” version was a customized RMAF variant, with mid-air refueling capability (taking fuel from specially converted C-130 Hercules transports), and the ability to fire two RVV-AE radar-guided missiles (export version of the Vympel R-77) at two aerial targets simultaneously. After the loss of two MiGs in incidents in 1998 and 2004, the RMAF possesses 14 airframes, of which 10 are believed to remain operational with No. 17 Squadron at Kuantan AFB. Since 2010, the RMAF has said several times that it would withdraw the MiG-29s from service, but they continue flying.

At LIMA2015, RAC MiG and its local partner ATSC proposed to the Malaysian Ministry of Defence an upgrade to the MiG-29NM standard. This would have been similar to the Indian air force MiG-29UPG, involving the replacement of the N-019E radar with more advanced Zhuk-ME (model FGM-229). The upgrade would also have enabled the MiGs to carry the same guided and unguided munitions as the RMAF’s Su-30MKMs. 

But members of the Russian delegation at LIMA told AIN that Malaysia refused this rather costly modernization, forcing RAC MiG to come up with a less expensive option modeled on the Myanmar upgrade. Earlier this year, RAC MiG brought in a MiG-29SM (mod.) full-flight simulator to a base in Malaysia for technology demonstration purposes.

RAC MiG continues working with local companies involved in MiG-29N maintenance and support. As such, ATSC has gained access to the RMAF airframes and produced a fleet report. It describes the surviving hardware as remaining in good condition, making lifetime extensions and upgrade options viable. Few airframes have exceeded 2,000 flight hours, and their maker has offered a lifetime extension to 6,000 hours and 40 calendar years.

Speaking to AIN at LIMA2017, RMAF chief Gen. Affendi bin Buang said that although the MiGs are still operational, their age causes “a gap in capability.” Advancements in technologies, especially sensor fusion and weaponry, force RMAF to consider options available for future MiG-29 operations. The basic aircraft is sturdy and robust, he said, “but there are certain systems in the MiG-29 that we wish to replace or upgrade in order to enhance the aircraft’s operational capacity.”

“At the moment we are still awaiting a government decision whether to continue the operation of the MiG-29 or to stop it,” Affendi continued. He has been briefed by his counterparts from India and Myanmar on what they have done to their MiGs. “In my view, the additional capability that [RAC MiG] is putting into these aircraft during their update is quite impressive. This make me feel confident that these aging but still maintainable aircraft have some life in the future.”
