The Philippine Air Force (PAF), through the 505th Search and Rescue Group (505th SRG), formally welcomed the return of the recovered Sikorsky S-76A during a Blessing Ceremony held on January 26, 2026, at Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base, Pasay City. The event marked a significant milestone in the PAF’s sustained efforts to restore and strengthen its air assets in support of national defense, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response missions.
After the extensive repair, the Sikorsky S-76A has been fully restored and declared operational, significantly enhancing the PAF’s search and rescue, air transport, and disaster response capabilities. Its return strengthens the PAF’s ability to safeguard lives and deliver timely air support, underscoring its enduring mission to serve and protect the nation, especially during emergencies and critical operations.

1) new CMS. The existing Atlas Elektronik COSYS-110M1 CMS on Kedahs are already 2 decades old without any upgrades.

2) TRS-3D radar. This should still be operationally capable. There are issues with the GAPU TRS-3D maintenance recently, but i hope that is not relatable to TLDM. Is it worthwhile to upgrade? Leave it as is? Or change to something cheap & new from Turkiye?

3) air defence missiles. Do we have the budget for it? Upgrading offensive systems while leaving it at risk of being sunk by enemy SSM/AShM is not a good plan.

Anyhow it would involve lots of money. Hundreds of million USD for sure. Is it worth it? I am of the opinion that it is not. Threat perceptions has changed, and i think a lightly armed ship like the kedah class is not suitable for wartime missions. So i am for leaving the Kedah class to remain as OPV under APMM control.

The proposal to install Surface-to-Surface Missiles (SSM) on vessels of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) KEDAH class is part of an initiative to enhance the RMN’s surface combat capabilities in order to meet current and future operational requirements. The Government has also approved the installation of SSM launch systems on all six KEDAH-class vessels. At present, the RMN is conducting a price survey to determine the actual overall cost of the project.
As information, the installation of the SSM will be carried out in phases and stages, taking into account the technical readiness of the vessels, operational requirements, and cost implications. In the initial phase, the assessment and integration of this capability will focus on a lead vessel as a pilot platform, before considering expansion to other vessels within the same class, subject to the effectiveness of implementation, RMN operational needs, and the approval of Government funding.
This phased approach reflects the Ministry’s efforts to ensure that the enhancement of the RMN’s combat capabilities is implemented prudently, prioritised appropriately, and provides the best value to the Government, in line with national maritime security and fiscal capacity.

1) new CMS. The existing Atlas Elektronik COSYS-110M1 CMS on Kedahs are already 2 decades old without any upgrades.

2) TRS-3D radar. This should still be operationally capable. There are issues with the GAPU TRS-3D maintenance recently, but i hope that is not relatable to TLDM. Is it worthwhile to upgrade? Leave it as is? Or change to something cheap & new from Turkiye?

3) air defence missiles. Do we have the budget for it? Upgrading offensive systems while leaving it at risk of being sunk by enemy SSM/AShM is not a good plan.

Anyhow it would involve lots of money. Hundreds of million USD for sure. Is it worth it? I am of the opinion that it is not. Threat perceptions has changed, and i think a lightly armed ship like the kedah class is not suitable for wartime missions. So i am for leaving the Kedah class to remain as OPV under APMM control.

The Defence Ministry has walked back its written answer published in Parliament on January 28. The original written reply had stated that the government has approved the funding for the surface-to-surface missiles for the Kedah class upgrade and the solution was the Naval Strike Missile (NSM).
The amended copy did not mentioned NSM at all and though the overall meaning was still the same, it appears that the SSM meant for the Kedah class could be something else
